Collection concerns Pilot Officer James Douglas Hudson, DFC (755052 Royal Air Force) who joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in June 1939 and trained as an observer. While on route to Malta in August 1940 his Blenheim crashed in Tunisia and he was subsequently interned for two and a half years by Vichy French in Tunisia and Algeria. After being freed he returned to Great Britain and after navigator retraining completed a tour of 30 operations on 100 Squadron. We were under the impression that we had this day off entirely. Accordingly I stayed in bed and was rudely disturbed before 11 oclock to be told that I was flying at half past. These sort of things do happen. The actual trip was only an hour and a waste of time. We were supposed to get in some air firing practice but we lost our target so it was a wash out. The weather has been very good of late and there is a plague of very small insects. They are all over the place & they do itch. They are so small it is almost impossible to squash them. [page break] I have not paid my mess bill since I arrived here so when next I get paid, normally on Friday, I shall have a large account to tip up. I have to send Jack’s wireless set on to his brother I didn’t know how I was going to pack it. Yesterday I received a p.c. from Don Chadwick who was posted to Watton on Tues. He arrived here with me (he is one of the original A2) & was granted 4 days leave on compassionate grounds, because his mother was ill. After that he got 7 days leave because he was not on an operational squadron. On arrival at Watton he immediately got another 7 days & is still not on a squadron. Isn’t it a damned shame that things are done so unevenly. It is a bad show. I have got a new pair of trousers so have a complete duplicate outfit now. Peter Hattersley served in the Royal Engineers between 1930 and 1935 but enlisted in the RAF in 1936. He trained as a pilot and flew with 106, 44 and 199 Squadrons. He completed 32 operations with 44 Squadron but had to force land his Wellington in France on his first operation with 199 Squadron in December 1942. He became a prisoner of war. He married Miss Kathleen Hattersley nee Croft after the war. He flew 23 operations, one as wireless operator/air gunner, 12 as navigator/bomb aimer and ten as pilot. Pilots were Squadron Leader Allen, Sergeant Stretton, Pilot Officer Campbell and Pilot Officer Parker. Operations were to Frankfurt, Heligoland, Charleville, Kiel, Fargniers, Dollbergen, Bohmte, Diepholz, Wismar, Schiphol Aerodrome, Rotterdam, Dortmund, Travemunde, Duisburg, Oslo fjord, Kattegut, Dortmund-Ems-Canal, Bordeaux, Pauillac, Essen, Emden and Magdeburg. Includes the awarding of the first Victoria Cross to a member of Roly's squadron and the circumstances leading to Roly's death in a flying accident.
