[/inserted] THE NEW ZEALAND NEWS No. 75 SQUADRON New Zealand Bomber Squadron No. 75 achieved a record for its group when taking part in the heaviest raids of the war – Hamburg (twice) and Essen (once), in four nights. It sent more aircraft than any other squadron in the group on each raid, and also secured a hundred per cent. photographs of the target on each occasion. The squadron, which has had its ups and downs when converting to new aircraft, changing stations and so on, is now in great heart, reminiscent of the days when it was commanded by Air Commodore M. W. Buckley and Group Captain C. E. Kay, and later by Group Captain E. G. Olson. The squadron is now commanded by an Englishman, Wing Commander M. Wyatt, while the Group Captain is another Englishman, K. M. M. Wasse, D.F.C., who has been to New Zealand nine times in New Zealand Shipping liners. Wing Commander Wyatt, who is shortly transferring on promotion, will be succeeded by Wing Commander R. D. Max, D.F.C., who fought in the Battle of France, carrying out six day and fifteen night raids, and being shot down near Amiens after bombing tanks. Later he flew Wellingtons on ten raids, did three Atlantic ferry trips with Hudsons, returning later for more bombing raids, including a daylight attack on Brest. One 75 crew returned from a Hamburg raid with four feet off the starboard wing after a collision with a Junkers 88, which Flight Sergeant I. G. Kaye (Marton) shot down. New Zealanders in another crew attacked by three fighters within five minutes were Flight Sergeants E. J. Roberts (Timaru), captain, with gunners Flt. Sergts. K. Jackson (Hamilton), D. L. C. Haub (Whangerei). They claimed at least one fighter destroyed. The observer in a third Stirling which claimed a fighter was F/O A. D. Howlett (New Plymouth), who had to hold dual controls hard over on one side during a two hour return journey after a Messerschmitt travelling at 300 m.p.h. had collided with Stirling, torn off part of its wing, and gone straight down itself. The immediate award of the D.F.M. was made to the Canadian engineer of the Stirling, captained by J. Joll, D.F.M. (New Plymouth), recently promoted Squadron Leader, and now Flight Commander. He is now carrying out his second tour with 75, and had done 44 raids. Flight Lieutenant D. Popplewell (Gore), who won the D.F.C. with No. 75, has now returned as bombing leader. Among those completing tours is Pilot Officer C. Carswell (Invercarigill). When the High Commissioner and Group Captain Manson recently visited the squadron, Mr. Jordan expressed the thanks and admiration of the Government and people of New Zealand for the fine record of the squadron. 1945.
