<dcterms:description>George Griffiths recounts his service in the RAF from 1942, when he volunteered as a wireless operator. In June 1942, he was called up and completed his wireless operator training before being posted to Norfolk in February 1943. During this time, he began his service in Air Sea Rescue for two months before being posted to RAF Cranwell for further wireless operator training. George recalls his most significant memories from his service. In 1944, he was posted to 28 ASI Unit at New Haven, where he wore the official insignia of Air Sea Rescue. During D-Day, he was on a launch boat at 03:00am patrolling the channel and provided rescue cover to aircraft during Operation Market Garden. Towards the end of the war, George joined ASI Unit 101, which was the first long-range Air Sea Rescue Unit. In July 1945, he was in Malta when the Japanese surrender was announced and recalls receiving gifts such as a gramophone and records.
During his time in Air Sea Rescue, he served in the UK and Europe, assisting RAF operations from the waters. At his first posting in Dover, William was responsible for four Vicars Guns on his motorboat. He remembers his most interesting operations, including the rescue of a Spitfire pilot in thick fog. In September 1941, William was posted to Malta in the General Marine Craft. During this posting, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal Coxswain and recalls his first experience taking parade, where he marched his leading column into the bay. He describes in detail the difficulties of operating the rescue launches whilst under bombardment and, in his words, 'the desperate conditions' Malta was then experiencing due to the lack of supplies of food, fuel and ammunition getting through. William was posted to Sicily and Civitavecchia during his tour of Europe and visited Rome before embarking to the UK in July 1944. William spent his final two years in the RAF in Glasgow, posted to a Torpedo Recovery Unit but he didn’t get along with the Commanding Officer.</dcterms:description>
