During the North African and Italian campaigns the Wellingtons, Halifaxes and Liberators of the Group, operating as a tactical force, attacked communications and concentrations of Rommel’s Africa Korps and of the Italian armies during their advance to the Quattara Depression, the Battle of El Alamein and during their retreat until their final capitulation in Tunisia. Without respite they operated against Kesselring’s army during the invasions of Sicily, Italy and the South of France. As a strategical force their targets – ports, airfields, marshalling yards, oil refineries and factories-ranged over the Mediterranean area and Europe. Aid was given to patriots in France, supplies and arms’ were dropped to Partizans in the Balkans and to the patriots in Warsaw. The Danube was mined persistently. Read. In the 1939 – 1945 World War 205 Group provided the only mobile force of heavy night bombers in the Mediterranean theatre. During the North African and Italian campaigns the Wellingtons, Halifaxes and Liberators of the Group operating as a tactical force, attacked communications and concentrations of Rommel’s Afrika Korps and of the Italian armies during their advance to the Quattara Depression, the Battle of El Alamein and during their retreat until their final capitulation in Tunisia. Without respite they operated against Kesselring’s army during the invasions of Sicily, Italy and the South of France. As a strategical force their targets – ports, airfields, marshalling yards, oil refineries and factories – ranged over the Mediterranean area and Europe. Aid was given to patriots in France, supplies and arms were dropped to Partizans in the Balkans and to the patriots in Warsaw. The Danube was mined persistently. An interesting development of the persistent and accurate bombing of enemy air-fields is shown here. Since November 1943 the G.A.F. in occupied countries has laid out new and wider dispersals at fields likely to be used by numbers of aircraft. They often cover distances of up to two miles away from the airfield boundary and presumably conservation of aircraft afforded by this dispersal is considered more important than the consequent waste of fuel and time made necessary between the actual landing area and these dispersals, as there are no extra provisions for refuelling and repairs in these new areas. Two Description An account of the resource Jim Hardy’s Royal Air Force Flying Log Book from 4th January 1944 until 31st January 1945. Posted to 311 Ferry Training Unit as a wireless operator. In February 1944 operational posting to 40 Squadron in Italy where he became Signals Leader. Served at RAF Moreton-in-Marsh, RAF Foggia. Aircraft flown were Wellington, Anson, B-24 Liberator. With 40 Squadron he flew 8 bombing operations (1 day and 7 night). He also flew one day operation flying supplies to Yugoslavian partisans (Operation Flotsam). His targets were Budapest, Ploiești, Valence, St. Valentin, Miskolc, Ravenna, Matesevo, Karlovac. His pilots were Wing Commander Mervyn-Jones, Flight Lieutenant McGaw, Warrant Officer Trigg and Wing Commander Kirwan. On 13th April 1944 whilst returning from a bombing operation to Budapest his aircraft ditched in to the sea off Lastovo (Lagosta) Isle. The crew were rescued from their dingy on the 14th April by a Cant Z.506 Airone floatplane of the Italian Air Force.
