[symbol] On the night of D-Day the attack immediately before the Normandy landings was on the coastal battery at Merville, and after the landings it was on Condé sur Noireau, south of Caen. [symbol] Different teams from 109 Squadron were being used to fly with 582 Squadron, and it became the turn of Sqn Ldr James Foulsham and Flt Lt John Swarbrick to fly with Sqn Ldr John Bentley Weightman on ED908 (Z) on 20 July 1944. Over the 42 completed flights, there were 22 successful releases (52%), 5 occasions when bombs were dropped by dead reckoning (12%), 2 other bombings in formation (5%), 3 flights as reserve aircraft when marking was not required and Target Indicators were brought back (7%), 6 technical failures (14%), and 4 failures for other reasons (10%), one involving the jettisoning of a 4,000lb bomb at 5238N 0325E. They did not return from their 43rd mission. James Foulsham and John Swarbrick were both awarded their Temporary Pathfinder Badge on 23 May 1944 and each received the posthumous award of the Distinguished Flying Cross for completing many operational sorties with notable successes.
