Trained as an air gunner at No. 7 Air Gunnery School, 14 Operational Training Unit, 1485 Flight, 1654 Conversion Unit and No. 5 Lancaster Finishing School. Operational posting to 9 Squadron in May 1944 as a mid-upper gunner. Served at RAF Stormy Down, RAF Husbands Bosworth, RAF Market Harborough, RAF Syerston, RAF Wigsley, RAF Bardney. Aircraft flown were Anson, Wellington, Stirling, Lancaster I, Lancaster III. He completed 11 night bombing operations with 9 Squadron. During this time trained as an air gunner. Trained at No. 2 Air Gunners School, 29 Operational Training Unit, 1654 Conversion Unit, and No 5 Lancaster Finishing School. During OTU Gunnery Course, a Miles Martinet was used as the target aircraft. In June 1944 posted to 61 Squadron. For his second tour he was posted to 9 Squadron in December often dropping Tallboy bombs. Served at RAF Dalcross, RAF Bruntingthorpe, RAF Wigsley, RAF Syerston, RAF Skellingthorpe, RAF Bardney. His targets were Orleans, Watten, Gelsenkirchen, Limoges, Prouville, Vitry, Beauvoir, St. Leu D’Esserent, Kiel, Donges, St Cyr Versailles, Givors, Stuttgart, Cahagnes, Joigny, Mont Candon, Bois de Cassan, Trossy St. Maximin, Secqueville, Chatellerault, Russelsheim, Bordeaux, Gilze-Rijen, Stettin, La Pallice, Rollancourt, Brest, Le Havre, Darmstadt, Boulogne, Dortmund Ems Canal, Karlsruhe, Urft Dam, Bergen, Altenbeken, Dortmund, Arnsberg, Swinemünde (Prinz Eugen), Heligoland, Berchtesgaden, Flensburg. His pilot for all operations was Flight Lieutenant Watkins, other than the Operation Post Mortem when it was Flying Officer Macdonald. Description An account of the resource S Stephens’ Flying Log Book from July 1943 until 9th December 1944. During this time trained as a bomb aimer. Trained at No. 3 (Observer) Advanced Flying Unit, 14 Operational Training Unit, 1660 Heavy Conversion Unit and No. 5 Lancaster Finishing School. Operation posting to 9 Squadron in April 1944. In November attended Air Bombers Instructor’s Course and posted to Empire Air Armament School. Served at RAF Bobbington/RAF Halfpenny Green, RAF Market Harborough, RAF Husbands Bosworth, RAF Scampton, RAF Swinderby, RAF Waddington, RAF Bardney, RAF Penrhos, RAF Manby. Aircraft flown were Anson, Wellington, Stirling, Lancaster. Stephens carried out 34 bombing operations (8 day, 26 night) to targets including Paris La Chapelle, Schweinfurt, Bordeaux, Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, Toulouse Saint-Martin-du-Touch, Bourg-Leopold, Tours, Duisburg, Brunswick, Nantes, Cherbourg, St. Martin de Varreville, Saumur, Pointe-du-Hoc, Argentan, Rennes, Aunay-sur-Odon, Aulnoye, Gelsenkirchen, Creil, St. Leu d’Esserent, Châtellerault, Nevers, Caen, Thiverny, Courtrai, Stuttgart, St. Cyr, Givors, Mont-Candon, Bois de Cassan, Etaples, Brest. His pilot on operations was Flying Officer Hill. On 7th June 1944 his aircraft was hit by ant-aircraft fire. Log book includes numerous hand written notes indicating further research carried out by other persons. Includes details of number of aircraft lost on each operation and the death of his pilot, Flying Officer Hill, in September 1944.
