T.A Hut 21, “R” Flight, 2 Squdn, RAF, Heaton Park, Manchester 24-8-42 Dear Mum, Dad & Moira, I have not written before because I wanted to tell you the classification result, but we have still not heard & we are getting rather fed up with it. However I will let you know as soon as I hear. I’m sorry I could not come down for the week-end to see Jack, but we could not get a forty-eight hr pass. However, late on Saturday afternoon, too late to come home they gave us a 36 hr pass, & I went to John’s house at Prestbury for the weekend. Its a marvellous house with tons of rooms, & everything bang up [page break] to date & his people were very nice. We had dinner at the Golf Club at Prestbury, on Saturday evening, & lunch at a hotel in Macclesfield on Sunday, & a terrific tea at home on Sunday evening. Mr Fisher is the controller of fuel for the Midlands & North of England, they must have bags of money. Anyway, I had a grand time & I was only too glad to get out of camp for a while. I’m still hoping to get a long enough leave to get home, but it is hopeless to try & forecast when we shall get it, so I may just turn up one day. We never know what is going to happen re leave, from one day to another. There is no laundry here so I am washing my own stuff, but [page break] I have not been successful with the shirts so I am sending one shirt, 2 collars & a towel in a separate parcel tomorrow. Could you keep it till next week-end, as I may possibly get home then, & can bring it back. If not, could you post it Monday. I like to know roughly when it is coming as, if we don’t claim it from the stores in a couple of days, it is sent back to the G.P.O. I have been having a very good time lately with the lads in the evenings, roller skating & flicks etc. I’m getting quite good at roller skating.
