He explains his application as apprentice to Armstrong Whitworth and describes his work there. He goes on to describe joining the RAF volunteer reserve in 1937 on his 18th birthday, as well as flying training in detail. After training he returns to Armstrong Whitworth but continues flying at weekends. He tells of a motorbike accident and hospitalisation. He recalls incidents while flying Hart aircraft, the second of which ended with the aircraft on its nose after a practice forced landing. As a result he was suspended from training, due to breach of flying (low flying aerobatics). He goes on to describe his attempts to reverse this and developments with the RAFVR and the beginning of World War 2. He describes reversing his conscription into the Army and subsequent enlistment in the RAF followed by flying training.</text>
