We are expecting to be posted to Weyburn on Saturday, & as I shall be very busy getting ready I’m afraid I shan’t be able to write everyone. I’m glad to see you’re working hard, & I expect you will have done your 2 lengths by now. I expect you had a nice Christmas. I’m sorry there wasn’t any more in the parcel. Up to the 27th I didn’t do much, then I moved to Mrs Turnbull’s (where Don stays) which was near to where Arthur Walter, John Stockbridge (he is on singles with me) & Pete Worrall. We went playing skittles (they call it bowling here.) On New Years Eve we went to a party at the lady’s [deleted] sister [/deleted] [inserted] daughter [/inserted] where the lads are staying. I drank a goodly drop of whisky , & considering I’ve never had any before I was not unduly affected. We were all taken home at about 5 a.m. I got up at mid-day, & we went to a party at an American’s house. She is a oldish woman with a couple of daughters who comes from California. She has a marvellous house, modelled on an old English Tudor house. Since then we’ve been ice skating, roller skating, bowling again, & tobaganning [sic], including falling in the river. Mr & Mrs Turnbull & Mabel were very good & I had a splendid time altogether. I never got up before midday, the whole 13 days. [page break] I met a very attractive girl indeed in Winnnipeg & took her to a couple of shows. She’s a very nice girl & “doesn’t trust English airmen!!” although she likes them. Unfortunately if I go to Weyburn I shan’t get another chance to go to Winnipeg, & that together with the fact that I shall be separated from all my new pals except John has left me rather cheesed. Still I expect I shall recover as usual. It will be very nice to see Don. The S.F.T.S course takes from 12 – 16 weeks, when with luck I get my wings & start home again. Weyburn, Sask. 16-3-43 Dear One & All, I’ve just written an A.G., so I will go into a bit more detail in this. As you know Don is now on the way home. It was quite sudden, & I miss being able to go to his room for a chat. I did well out of it though. He left me a case, a shaving kit, a forage cap, tobacco pouch, & writing kit, & 2 pairs of wings, which he couldn’t bother to take. I gave him the other stockings I bought in Montreal, & 2 prs of socks I happened to have bought. Sorry it was too sudden, to get anything else. I had a newsy letter from Roy but the news was six months old. I’ve also heard from Basil [page break] & Reg Popplestone. Please thank Auntie Lot for her letter & Gran & Granpy [sic] for their good wishes. What sort of job have you got Mum. I suppose I shall hear when your letter arrives. John & I spent the week-end in Regina, but life is pretty deadly there. The beer parlors [sic] close at 8p.m, & the liquors stores are sold out & besides you have to buy a license. You should have heard Don’s views on all this. We stayed in an hotel as we wanted a good sleep. I felt so tired & slept nearly all the time. Anyway I’ve decided to give up cigarette smoking, & we haven’t flown for 2 days, so I now feel much fitter. We’ve had a howling blizzard now for 3 days. The worst yet. [page break] The snow drifts are tremendous. We have to stagger through 3 feet of snow to get to the cook house. Visibility is about 20yds & some parts of the camp are almost impossible to get at. And we thought spring was on the way! I’ve had an A.G. from Jack. I hear he is on Wimpey’s again. The flying is going fairly well. I’ve knocked off most of my solo cross countries. We go about 300 miles. It seems nothing out here. We pass nothing bigger than towns of about 5,000 people in that space, & only one or two of them. We had a very pleasant time in Regina. John Stockbridge & I tried to go horse riding. We went to the Regina Riding Club, to get a ride However it is a private Club so we couldn’t hire one. They let us have an old Mountie horse which was used in the Coronation in England. He & Pete May seem to have gone for a Burton on their first trip. Old Jack seems to be carrying on O.K. They say if you don’t get it in the first 5 raids you are likely to be O.K. As I said in the A.G. I have volunteered for the reconnaissance course. My instructor says I am the bomber type anyway, so I thought I might as well learn a lot about [deleted] it [/deleted] the subject & may be get onto Beaufighters or Mosquitoes or anything Well that’s all for now folks. I hope you got my cable O.K., & I shall probably be coming on leave next Tuesday or Wednesday. It should have been this week–end but as it is a Bank Holiday I don’t suppose they will let us travel. At any rate we should have quite a good time as they have organised a Stay at Home [page break] holiday here. Pete Lamb is still on the other side, continuing training, but John Cox is with me I have met chaps I knew all the way through training at various times, & its interesting to see how they have all ended up. I’m certainly glad I went on that G.R. course for many reasons, one of which is that, the Canadian pay being twice as much as home here, I was able to completely kit myself out, including 2 uniforms & still have a little cash to spare. The other reasons are that I saw one of the really nice parts of Canada for a change & the third & most important is that I have quite a fair chance to get on something for which I have [page break] always nursed a somewhat optimistic desire. I don’t know if Harrogate is a particularly lucky town, but I was amazed to see loads of clothes & silk – like stockings in the shops, & smartly dressed men walking about. I was under the impression that people were wearing any old thing. Another thing that amazed us was the reception people gave us in the places we passed through to get here. Waving, putting flags in the windows & cheering. I’d thought they would be fed up with the sight of uniform by now. The news is certainly pretty good now, isn’t it. For dinghy drill we put on soaking wet battledress & flying kit, discarded by previous class, & also a Mae West, & jump from top stage into water & climb into dinghy. Still if you have to wait a month before you even go to see him again, its going to be some time before you get organised isn’t it? About the Income Tax dad, I was thinking if I have to pay it at all I might as well do it in a lump sum, as by cheque I shan’t really miss it. What do you think? As you see we have been posted at last, thank goodness although I had a wizard time the last week in Harrogate [page break] On Saturday, I had some very amusing experiences. John & I went Knaresborough on the bus. In the queue an old boy had a fit & carried on a bit. When we got Knaresborough we went on the river & just ahead of us a boat containing two women and a child sank after striking a submerged rock. The child made a dickens of a row, but were rescued O.K. by another boat. We hastened to see if we could help, but I lost control & we nearly sank the rescue craft which caused the small child to give vent to hideous howls again, so we withdrew quickly. On going back to Harrogate I met another RAF friend & we went for a drink. He [page break] introduced me to some very nice girls. In the course of buying some beer I was loudly accused by the bar-maid of swindling her by giving her a two bob bit instead of a half-crown. On retiring discomfited I knocked a couple of whiskies over. I may say that I was completely sober all the evening though rather happy. We then decided to go to the mess dance. [deleted word] my partner & I got in free, but I marred that by knocking over a chairful of whiskies, which someone had left. Luckily they didn’t seem to mind. To finish up the evening I went to what is usually the gent’s cloakroom, not knowing it had been changed into the ladies for that evening. I soon found out though, when a mob of screaming women threw me out [page break] on my ear (actually there were only three but it seemed more). After that the evening went off happily but uneventfully. This station is the last word in primitiveness, almost as bad as Don’s tents, but it should be quite pleasant when we get going tomorrow. It should last 6 weeks but it will probably be longer as the weather is bad. Could you please send [underlined] all [/underlined] my woollen socks & my RAF black boots please mum as quickly as possible as I have gone through both my pairs of shoes. I will send a pair for grampy to mend as soon as I can find some brown paper. Do you think it would be safe to send my bike on here? If not I will pop home if I can & fetch it if we get a week-end off? We have a long way [page break] to walk as the station is very spread out. If there are any thick sweaters being given away by anyone, one of those would come in useful too, but don’t go out of your way You are probably wondering why I am writing so much, but as this place is quite a way from anywhere & the mess isn’t very entertaining I haven’t much else to do. Transcription Text transcribed from audio recording or document On the Train Monday 4-10-43 Dear Folks My future address is Officers Mess, RAF Station, Dalcross, Invernesshire, Scotland. It is about 10 miles East of Inverness & is, as you can see, just about as far north as a ‘drome could be. I feel almost as if I’m going abroad, as this will be entirely new country for me – should be rather interesting. All four of us are together. We have to spend to-night in Perth. We charge expenses at the other end, so we don’t intend to go without. Have just had a 4/6d breakfast in an hotel in Crewe. Wasn’t worth it though. I got to Temple Meads by five to twelve without any [page break] trouble. John Cox arrived O.K. as his father got some petrol from the Board as he said a taxi would use up more than he would. Some diversion was caused by a little negro sailor who was so drunk he found the platform wasn’t wide enough for him & he fell off onto the lines twice. A policeman there didn’t seem at all interested. When the train came in he said to us that “There are [deleted] some [/deleted] probably some more, about 5[?] in fact, negro sailors lying on the lines somewhere & he went off to look for them with his lantern. We had bags of room on the train & on getting to Crewe caught a train at 6.40 to Nantwich, & got a lift from there to the camp, where a very good breakfast awaited us. This is a wizard station so far. It is situated with the Highlands on one side & Solway Firth on the other & the scenery therefore is grand. There is apparently always a half gale blowing & its [inserted] nearly [/inserted] always raining, but this doesn’t matter much as we are very comfortable. Only two in a room, with a fire to each room & things very comfortable. The mess is also wizard. The lounge has a huge old fashioned hearth stretching right across the room, with huge pine logs burning in it. We arrived in the middle of the afternoon, & [page break] they rustled up a meal of ham, pickles, cheese, & lettuce for us. For dinner we had fresh salmon just caught in the firth, & peas, so it looks as though things are fine as regards grub. There are billiard tables & darts etc in the mess. [deleted] This [/deleted] I played a game of snooker, which was interupted [sic] by a squadron leader catching a mouse & putting it on the billiard table & watching it dive into the pockets. Ford, Officers Mess, RAF. Mepal, Nr. Ely, Cambs. Wed. 30-8-44. Dear Folks, Well, I have now done my first trip. I did it last night, & it was a very long one. I feel pretty tired at the moment. However it is a terrific experience. I flew over 4 different counties. Will you send on a packet of photographs of me that I left on my dresser please. As soon as possible. Conditions here are really pretty primitive, but the food is quite good. However we have got a good crowd of blokes in our hut. (6 of us & we are trying to make it as much like home as [page break] possible. I have met up with two blokes I knew very well at Dalcross & Wolverhampton & they have shown me the local pubs. The beer situation is pretty good. We don’t get a terrific amount of free time & we get no days off or 48hr passes at all. We get 6 days leave every six weeks, but I don’t know when ours will be coming off. However I hope to be able to get home to collect the car sometime. I drove most of the way from Feltwell, in Reg’s car & coped quite well By the way this is a New Zealand squadron & as I haven’t any N.Z. blokes in my crew I don’t know why I was posted here really. [page break] Anyway they seem to be pretty decent blokes. Well, folks that is all the news for now. I am now going on a short practice flight to-night, & then get some lovely sleep in. I will ring up to-morrow, if possible. Well, a lot has happened since I last wrote. We set off for Africa last Thursday week, & arrived in Cornwall, where we were delayed by fog for two days. We set off on Saturday afternoon, & arrived in Rabat, French Morocco about midnight. [page break] It really was a marvellous experience. It was quite hot, & after having a meal we went to the Belima Hotel in the town. It was really a most up to date place. Terrific great white buildings, good roads, big shops, etc. There was a dance on when we got there, but we went straight to bed. It is a French Town & there really were thousands of marvellous French girls dressed in the height of fashion, but they weren’t in the least interested in us. The next day was Sunday & quite hot again, but very pleasant in tropical kit. Unfortunately all the French shops were shut, & so [page break] we got permission to go down into the Arab quarter It really was amazingly interesting. Thousands of them dressed in all different styles, trying to buy & sell everythings [sic]. Rackets everywhere. Trying to buy watches, & English pound notes, which are very valuable. The rate of exchange is 200 francs to the £ but I was offered 600 francs there. I bought some pomegranates, and a couple of lbs of walnuts & a couple of lbs of almonds, with a bag to put them in. Unfortunately we only had the morning there & we really didn’t get to know the places well enough to buy shoes etc, although there were some wonderful leather things for sale. Also brandy at 12/- a bottle [page break] but we had to bring our own bottle & by the time we had got them, they had closed. We then spent the lunch time under the trees in the outside café outside the hotel, in the sun, & watching the people go by, drinking brandy at 7d a tot, while Arabs tried to sell us stuff. A really enjoyable day. In the [deleted] evenin [/deleted] afternoon we went to the drome outside the town to get the aircraft ready for next day, passing Arabs with their camels & donkeys etc. In the evening we sat under the stars again, sipping stuff, & tried to go to a cabaret later, but British forces were not allowed after 10. Stupid regulation. [page break] The next morning we took off at 8.30, & were back, sitting in the mess at Riccall, the same evening. We got cleared from Riccall on the Tuesday, & left for here on the Wednesday, after saying cheerio to Paddy Clarke, John Winter, & a friend I met at a WAAF dance. We arrived in London about three o’clock, - stayed at a RAF hotel for the night, going to see a show in the evening. Nervo & Knox & Will Hay in “For crying out loud.” We could only have a box, but it was very enjoyable. We are now on a squadron [deleted] now [/deleted], 246 squadron, & we carry freight from here to Calcutta in Eastern India [page break] although soon the squadron is turning over to passengers. Standards are very high indeed. [deleted] We [/deleted] They do not tolerate accidents of any sort. We have to dress smartly too, & we are expected to compete with the Air Lines. I am really very inexperienced for this job, but I hope to make a go of it. We may get some leave shortly I have to do a couple of weeks on practice flights, & then off to India & back. This station is very dispersed & a long way to walk & I wish I hadn’t sold the old bike to the fat man at Riccall, although it really was falling to pieces & I should have had to pay 10/- to get it here. We are really in the New Forest, & it looks grand at this [page break] time of the year. On our living site we seem to be entirely cut off from the drome & its very pleasant Unfortunately I made a bad start to-day, as I was 10 mins late for a talk by the C.O. owing to not being wakened. Dear Mum, Dad & Moira, Thank you for your letter I was very surprised to hear about Uncle Reg, & I very much hope he is getting on alright. It must have been a nasty accident. There have been quite a few accidents with grenades lately, haven’t there. The training for flying – boats does take between 18 month & 2 years, which is one of the reasons why I didn’t feel to keen on it. As for the Hudsons, they are bombers in a way but not in Bomber Command. There duties are varied. Bombing ports ships submarines & convoying ships but they don’t go on great long night trips like Bomber Command. Sometimes they don’t do anything but convoying [page break] don’t think from my cricketing experience, that I really have the confidence. Uncle Reg must have been pretty cool to direct the H.G.s to put on a tourniquet, after being nocked about like that & I hope he soon gets on the job again. Clem Fletcher woke up on [deleted] Frid [/deleted] Monday, feeling pretty poor, & when he reported sic, it was discovered that he had mumps. The hut was fumigated & we have to report every morning for a few days to make sure we haven’t got it. We all feel O.K. so it seems pretty sure we shan’t get it now. We’ve had a pretty good time lately, dancing, roller skating, etc, & we are trying to see “Dubarry was a Lady” at the Opera House with Frances Day Jackie Hunter & Arthur Riscoe, although the reports say it is rather disappointing. His address is ‘Shandon’ Dale Brow, Prestbury, but as I have only been there twice & Mr & Mrs Fisher have now gone to Windermere for 3 weeks, I don’t know that I’d bother to write. I may get a 48 hr this week–end. We’ve had very bad luck. We were all given 4 days leave yesterday, but it was cancelled immediately & I don’t think there is any chance of getting it now. Anyway I’d like to see Denis, but we may get posted before he arrives, in fact we probably shall. I will try & write to Uncle Reg as soon as possible I see you suggest I should try for fighters, Dad. We (Ivor & I) had rather a trying [page break] time last night having to wander around until about nine until at last some air crew chaps took us to their billets which were ½ empty, & gave us supper etc. & were very decent all round. We have not seen much of London yet, as the tubes seemed to whizz so fast that we were a St. John’s Wood in no time at all. The chaps here seem very decent, although I have not yet palled up with any of them and we have a very good corporal so I am looking forward to a good time. Stratford–on–Avon Warwicks 2–4–42 Dear Mum, Dad & Moira, I have now been here for a day & a half & I think I am going to like it. The discipline is certainly tighter but there are many advantages. The hotel is an old Tudor place & has low ceilings heavy wooden beams & washed walls. There is a postcard of it at one of the shops, but I could not get it to–day, as it is early closing day. The town is very small & picturesque with the river, where we can go rowing. The Shakespeare Memorial Hall is a big place by the river. There is a Shakespeare festival starting on the 4th & I shall go to see some of the plays if only for the experience. There are cafes & pubs every few yards, although I have only had 1 1/2 pints of beer ever since I have been in the RAF I’m afraid I have been separated from my particular pal Roy Barrolet, & several others who have not been posted yet. Only 20 out of 50 were However I have some pals here. John Fisher [page break] my old room–mate & several others. Its funny how unreal the past seems. It seems as though I have been in the RAF for years now, instead of less than 3 weeks, and London seems ages ago although we only left yesterday. We had to fill in usual forms yesterday, and then looked round the place. Had a glass of beer in a very cosy little pub. Unfortunately we have to be in by 10 o’clock. Most chaps already on the course seem to swot a lot. Afraid there is absolutely no chance of a leave until the end of the course which is 10 weeks at the moment, but may be speeded up. THERE IS NO FLYING ON THIS COURSE as you probably know. We did some drill or square–bashing on the green by the river in the sun then P.T. in the park this morning. It was quite enjoyable. We played rugger this afternoon. I played full back for the flight v “C” flight. We lost heavily as we have never played to–gether before I was complimented on my game however, which is a good thing, as they take a lot of notice of sport. I got a bash on the nose, which made it bleed copiously for most of the game. It stopped about 1/2 time however, but I got another bash a bit later & it started again. The whole of this enjoyable day only cost us 2/0, as the forces can buy a 1/– ticket to travel anywhere in London by bus or tube all day. On Monday [deleted] us [/deleted] Roy & I went to a cinema in Camden town to see “Dumbo” It is very good & you’d love it Feeto. On Tuesday we were inspected by the Group Captain and unfortunately just as he was inspecting our flight, the band, which was only 5 in front of us started playing “You’d be far better off in a home” and winking a us We all started grinning but luckily the G.C. didn’t say anything I have had a letter from John which was very welcome. The Fry’s Square meal was very delicious, & I was glad to have the cigarettes, although I received 60 from Auntie Cis as well. I had intended to give up cigarettes, but have now changed my mind. Yes I have received my parcel from Mrs Noakes & have written a note of thanks. It was certainly good of them to send the stuff to me. Re your parcel - there was no tie in it. I am sure of this as I examined it rather thoroughly, because I thought it would be in there. Are you sure you put it in? The parcel was quite firmly tied as far as I remember & I don’t think anyone could have taken the tie. Well, you may or may not be pleased to hear that we received our flying kit yesterday. Its marvellous stuff. I’ll tell you about it. First there is a grand pair of flying boots. They are just like big editions of the boots you see Duchesses[??] etc. wearing at race meetings, & they are wonderfully comfortable. We have 3 pairs of gloves 1 silk, woollen & [page break] 1 gauntlet. They are worn with silk next to skin. We also have RAF Battledress which is same as army only blue (Roy Hussey[?] was wearing it when we saw him) On top of this goes a big [indecipherable word] just like an eiderdown. On top of this goes a [deleted] suit of [/deleted] Sidcot suit. It is of heavy, canvas-linen material, & altogether it is pretty heavy. It has a detachable fur collar. Then there is a beautifully soft leather helmet with earphones & oxygen mask (detachable). I may bring the helmet home to show you. Altogether it made us feel that we really are getting somewhere, & we were prancing about the billets with it all on. Visibility was very poor with clouds at 2000’ & made things rather difficult. However, F/O Alderdice said that if the weather improves, I should go [underlined] SOLO [/underlined]. I only hope it does. The usual trouble: Landings! has been my bogey to-day, but with the blustering wind even the instructors found it difficult to land well. All being well, I should be home next Tuesday or Friday. It all depends on when I get my 11 hour test. I [underlined] MUST [/underlined] do well in that because this flying has really got me, & I don’t want to be an Observer. We had some very good fun on Tuesday. We did a slow roll in which we went upside down, so that our heads were in the clouds. It was grand. We have had a good time in Leicester lately, & the money has gone a bit, but still it has been very enjoyable. Still they say that instructors don’t bind[?] unless the pupil is worth binding at, so I don’t mind. I don’t know where he is yet, but I shall no doubt know when I get home. Thanks for the cigs, mum, they are very acceptable. Don’t bother about food, I can always get some. However I will let you know as soon as I hear. I’m sorry I could not come down for the week-end to see Jack, but we could not get a forty-eight hr pass. However, late on Saturday afternoon, too late to come home they gave us a 36 hr pass, & I went to John’s house at Prestbury for the weekend. Its a marvellous house with tons of rooms, & everything bang up [page break] to date & his people were very nice. We had dinner at the Golf Club at Prestbury, on Saturday evening, & lunch at a hotel in Macclesfield on Sunday, & a terrific tea at home on Sunday evening. Mr Fisher is the controller of fuel for the Midlands & North of England, they must have bags of money. Anyway, I had a grand time & I was only too glad to get out of camp for a while. I’m still hoping to get a long enough leave to get home, but it is hopeless to try & forecast when we shall get it, so I may just turn up one day. We never know what is going to happen re leave, from one day to another. There is no laundry here so I am washing my own stuff, but [page break] I have not been successful with the shirts so I am sending one shirt, 2 collars & a towel in a separate parcel tomorrow.
