<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Franco Nocchieri recalls his early years as an orphan living in several different towns in the Province of Pavia. He describes the bombing of the Voghera railway station, which started while he was heading to school. He goes on to explain how he and his schoolmates used to cheer during air-raids, as they were free to skip school and play. He recalls his experience as live-in delivery boy at his stepfather’s tavern at Albaredo Arnaboldi, a vantage point from which he witnessed the daily attempts to destroy the Ponte della Becca, a bridge across the Po River. Franco describes his memories of ‘Pippo’, which he tried to watch every night, and mentions it dropping explosive devices disguised as fountain pens and toys. He describes the difficult co-existence between the local population and Axis troops, stressing the brutality of fascist militiamen. He also describes the fearsome reputation of a prison in the nearby town of Broni, known as ‘Villa Triste’, where many people disappeared. He remarks on his fearless attitude, except while listening to Radio Londra, which was a criminal offence at the time. Franco comments on the food shortages of the time and describes how the poor resorted to eating cats, which were a substitute for rabbit. He also recalls several wartime events, including: a narrow escape from the Ponte della Becca bombing; widespread fear inspired by so-called ‘Mongols’ (which were part of a German foreign division); a public execution; a friend killed by a bomb believed to have been dropped by ‘Pippo’; the strafing of a funeral procession, and the sight of Felice Fiorentini, a war criminal dubbed 'The Beast', being paraded in and around the province in a cage after the end of the war. He also mentions various stories from his time as a member of the Azione Cattolica Italiana, a Roman Catholic lay association.]]></dcterms:description>

He explains the strategic importance of the city, due to the presence of locomotive works. He recalls taking shelter from the bombs in a former manganese mine. He remembers the time as a child, when he used to go into the forest looking for mushrooms and finding incendiary devices. He says that he was not afraid of these objects because, at school, there were posters with detailed descriptions of the ordnance. He happened to find V-2 ramps hidden in the forest. He explains how it was a very interesting time for children because there was always something happening. The most annoying aspect, he remarks, was being woken up, not only by the air alarm, but also by the rumbling of his own tummy. He recalls seeing Pathfinder aircraft, which they, as children, used to call 'The Iron Gustav' and when it dropped the target indicators, which they called 'Christmas trees'. He tells about his sister’s weird and inexplicable behaviour. The bomb hit the ground about 20 metres from her home, which collapsed like a house of cards. She remembers the death of four people, including her mother; how she was severely injured, barely survived, and kept in the dark about her mother’s death for a week. Brigitte describes the attempts to get in touch with her father with the news of his wife’s death and how he was informed only a week later, having come home on her mother’s birthday. She tells of wartime hardships: food rationing; daily calorie intake dropping from the notional 1200 calories to 600 and reduced spaces for obituaries in newspapers.]]></dcterms:description>

He maintains that the worst year was 1943, when aircraft were no longer able to take off and Germany lost its air supremacy. He tells of his neighbour, Field Marshal Erhard Milch, and how his mother got acquainted with Goering’s wife. Christoph recalls how a bomb splinter nearly hit his baby brother and how this triggered a religious epiphany. He describes moments of humour when, waiting for the next bombing, they wondered if something had happened to the bomber crews. He talks of how he was fascinated by the searchlights forming a cross when coning an enemy aircraft and the moment he stumbled upon the shrunken corpse of an allied pilot in the Grünwald forest.]]></dcterms:description>

Burckhard describes his detention in a hospital near Liverpool: he learned to speak English by reading an old newspaper, with the help of a pocket dictionary; used a makeshift notebook made of discarded medical reports held together by medical tape; read the news to his fellow inmates. <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Günter Lucks (b. 1925) describes how he was forced to join the Hitler Youth in 1939, an event that caused a great deal of disturbance in a family with a strong communist background. When his parents moved out, because of his father’s job as aircraft engineer, he and his brother stayed with his aunt in Hamburg. There he was caught in the bombing on 27 July 1943, when ‘the term Firestorm was born’. He describes high-capacity bombs and mentions incendiaries loaded with sticky substances and phosphorus. He tells of the desperate, but futile, attempts to extinguish the flames in the attic of their house and recounts how his brother went off to search for their aunt, only to meet his death in the firestorm. He describes how he fled from the burning building and recalls the time he spent in derelict air shelters, begging for bread; his search for his brother among the dead bodies and the encounter with a Wehrmacht search and rescue team, who accused him of looting corpses. He describes how he reached the university, where he received some food and a ticket to Czechoslovakia, where he eventually reunited with his parents. He talks about his mother’s trip back to Hamburg searching for his brother.]]></dcterms:description>

He chronicles the bombing of 13 July 1943, when almost 1,000 people were killed. Alessandro describes the sky being turned red by the fires and the effects of a blast wave. He talks of the Piazza Risorgimento shelter, deemed much safer as it was a reinforced concrete underground structure.
