Spencer Lewis Belton flew as an observer/ bomb aimer with 144 Squadron from RAF Hemswell. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal after an operation to Wilhelmshaven in July 1940 and was interviewed about it by the British Broadcasting Corporation. [underlined] Private Effects [/underlined] Any private effects which are under Royal Air Force control are forwarded to the R.A.F. Central Depository for retention in safe custody. If the airman returns, they are restored to him. If later an airman reported missing dies whilst a prisoner of war, they are dealt with as laid down in para. 2 below. II. [underlined] Deceased Airmen [/underlined] 2. [underlined] Private Effects [/underlined] Any private effects [inserted] which [/inserted] are under Royal Air Force control are forwarded to the R.A.F. Central Depository (if not already held there on account of the airman concerned having been previously reported missing or a prisoner of war) Some time must necessarily elapse before disposal can be effected, which is done only on the authority of the Air Ministry. A list of the private effects is sent to the next-of-kin with a request that he/she will state which items it is desired should in due course be forwarded to him/her.
