Spencer Lewis Belton flew as an observer/ bomb aimer with 144 Squadron from RAF Hemswell. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal after an operation to Wilhelmshaven in July 1940 and was interviewed about it by the British Broadcasting Corporation. I.	[underlined] AIRMEN REPORTED MISSING OR PRISONER OF WAR [/underlined]&#13;
1.	[underlined] Private Effects [/underlined]&#13;
Any private effects which are under Royal Air Force control are forwarded to the R.A.F. Central Depository for retention in safe custody.  If the airman returns, they are restored to him.  If later an airman reported missing dies whilst a prisoner of war, they are dealt with as laid down in para. 2 below.&#13;
&#13;
II.	[underlined] Deceased Airmen [/underlined]&#13;
2.	[underlined] Private Effects [/underlined]&#13;
Any private effects [inserted] which [/inserted] are under Royal Air Force control are forwarded to the R.A.F. Central Depository (if not already held there on account of the airman concerned having been previously reported missing or a prisoner of war)  Some time must necessarily elapse before disposal can be effected, which is done only on the authority of the Air Ministry.  A list of the private effects is sent to the next-of-kin with a request that he/she will state which items it is desired should in due course be forwarded to him/her.&#13;
&#13;
Any communication regarding effects or the disposal of any moneys that my eventually be found to the deceased airman’s estate should be addressed to:-&#13;

The question of an award will then be considered and the decision notified in due course.  (Note. A Form MPB 502 and envelope are attached for use where applicable)&#13;

IV.	[underlined] Orphans Pension [/underlined]&#13;
The guardian of a deceased airman’s children whose mother is dead and who claims on their behalf that the father died as a result of war service should complete Form MPB 504 and forward it, in the addressed and official paid envelope provided, to the Ministry of Pensions.  The question of an award will then be considered and the decision notified in due course.  (Note.  A Form MPB 504 and envelope are attached for use where applicable)&#13;

V.	[underlined] Address of the Ministry of Pensions [/underlined]&#13;
It should be noted that the war time address of the Ministry of Pensions is as given on the addressed official paid envelope, and [underlined] not [/underlined] as stated in para. 2 of “Instructions to Applicants” on Forms MPB 502 and 504.&#13;

When the next-of-kin, not being the deceased airmans [sic] widow or the guardian of his orphaned children, wishes to ascertain whether he/she is eligible for any grant from the Ministry of Pensions, application should be made to the local office of that Ministry, the address of which can be obtained from any Post Office.&#13;
