Description
Top left - Group of aircrew queuing to board crew bus at an unidentified location. All are in flying kit with parachute harness and Mae Wests; several are carrying flight bags.
Top right - A group of nine airmen, two sitting, at RAF Syerston outside a single-storey hut. Eight are RAF and the man on the extreme right is Fleet Air Arm. In the background are two "J" type hangars. An adjacent label on the album page reads: "Dave Shannon; Taffy Jones; W/C Gibson; Hutch; S/L ?; Eric Maynard; Joe Young; Don Curtin; Sub/Lt Muttrie"
Bottom left - A copy of a cartoon portraying bomb-damaged buildings at night with a stylised bomber aircraft flying above. Caricatures of Hermann Goering and Adolf Hitler are viewing a large carved memorial stone, lit by a candle held by Goering. The wording on the stone reads: "This Stone Was Unlaid At Munich By 106 Sqdn. P/O Butterworth, P/O Osmond, Sgt March, Sgt Hatt, Sgt Pitchford, P/O Wickins, P/O Henry. On 19/20 Sept '42" This refers to the operaetion of those dates, P/O Butterworth's crew flying Lancaster R5677. Annotation on rear of photograph reads: " Copy from Johhny Wickins Logbook".
Bottom right - Group of nine airmen, one seated and eight standing, at an unidentified outdoors location. Of particular note is the second man from the left: S/Lt G Muttrie RNVR. He was an observer from the Fleet Air Arm, seconded to fly as a bomb aimer with Bomber Command for his knowledge of ship recognition. Annotation on rear of photograph reads: "L-R 1, 2 S/Lt Muttrie, 3 Jo Young, 4 Jo, 5 Eric Haywood, 6 Guy Gibson, 7 Jones, 8 Don Curtin, 9 D Shannon" It is known that the airman on the extreme left (number 1) is P/O R E G Hutchison, the WOP in Gibson's crew.
