Middle - Approximately thirty aircrew dressed in a variety of flying kit, all wearing parachute harness and Mae Wests, outside a single-storey hut at Syerston. Two Type J hangars in the background. Close to the hut are two RAF officers, one wearing a greatcoat and peaked cap, the other in service dress and peaked cap. Standing with his back to the camera, hands on hips, is W/Cdr Guy Gibson, wearing battledress trousers, peaked cap and sheepskin flying jacket.
Top right - Two men dressed in bathing trunks sit on grass with a background of trees at an unidentified location. The photograph is labelled "L to R Frank Ruskell (Nav) Winco Gibson" These men are P/O Frank Ruskell, Gibson's navigator and W/Cdr Guy Gibson.
Bottom left - Photograph labelled "1 Tommy Jones I.O 2. N Scrivener". In the foreground are two RAF officers, one wearing a greatcoat and peaked cap, the other wearing battledress, peaked cap, parachute harness and Mae West. This confirms that Jones is the Intelligence Officer on the left, F/Lt Scrivener,a navigator, on the right. Behind them a group of four aircrew stand next to, or lean on, a rustic wooden seat outside a single-storey hut at RAF Syerston. All are wearing flying kit, parachute harness and Mae Wests. On the ground and seat are flight bags and parachutes. In the background is a "J" type hangar.
Bottom right - Two aircrew standing outside a single-storey hut with a "J" type hangar in the background. Both men are wearing battledress with one also wearing parachute harness and a Mae West. The other's pilot brevet is visible but it is known that both are pilots. A label below the photograph reads: "L to R Dave Shannon and Don Curtin" F/Lt Don Curtin was a US citizen from New York, serving with the RCAF. Curtin confirms the location as RAF Syerston as he joined 106 Sqn in October 1942 and was KIA in February 1943, before the squadron's move to RAF Metheringham. The pilot in battledress is F/Lt D J "Dave" Shannon.
