106 Squadron aircrew and Manchesters

Members of 106 Sqn RAF, including the Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Guy Gibson (standing middle, front row), celebrate at RAF Coningsby after Operation Millennium, the the first ‘Thousand Bomber’ operation to Cologne, on 30/31 May 1942. The squadron's Manchesters, in the course of being replaced by Lancasters, are in the background. N.B. Gibson did not participate in this operation as he had been hospitalised two weeks earlier at RAF Rauceby.
