Tom Lofthouse’s Observer’s, Air Gunner’s, and W/T Operator’s Flying Log Book from 16th January 1943 until 3rd May 1945. During this time trained as an air gunner. Trained at No. 3 Bombing and Gunnery School, 21 Operational Training Unit, 1652 Heavy Conversion Unit, before being posted to 466 (RAAF) Squadron in December 1943 for operations.
Posted to 1689 Bomber (Defence) Training Flight in August 1944 as a gunnery instructor. In March 1945 posted to 77 Squadron for a second operational tour.
Served at RAAF West Sale, RAF Moreton-in-Marsh, RAF Marston Moor, RAF Driffield, RAF Holme-on-Spalding Moor.
Aircraft flown were Battle, Wellington, Halifax.
With 466 Squadron he flew 36 bombing operations as read gunner (31 night and 5 day). His targets were Berlin, Magdeburg, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Augsburg, Trappes, Le Mans, Essen, Nuremburg, Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, Tergnier, Karlsruhe, Aulnoye, Acheres, Cherbourg, Colline Beaumont, Hasselt, Boulogne, Bourg-Leopold, Maisy, Chateaudun, Juvisy, Laval, Sterkrade, Siracourt, Marquise-Mimoyecques, Oisemont, Le Landes Vieilles, Sannerville, Ardouval, Les Catelliers, Foret de Nieppe. His pilot on all operations was Flying Officer Winter.
He flew a further 10 bombing operations with 77 Squadron (2 night and 8 day). Targets were Chemnitz, Essen, Dortmund, Homburg, Bottrop, Witten, Recklinghausen, Dulmen, Osnabruck, Wangerooge, Frisian Islands. Hi pilots were Flight Lieutenant Wilson and Flying Officer Goulden.
