Discusses Spitfires flying around the bridge Then talks about a visiting German officer and then advancing British forces, Swedish red cross food distribution to prisoners, recapturing escaped prisoners, jumpy mood of Germans, woken early to move to the bridge two miles away due east, then moved by guards, impossible to identify, confusion of troops and equipment, morning light, seeing the bridge in the distance, moving fastly and hastily, to a quiet void of Germans and expectant to action, looking at the safety of treeline, then then action or battle started looking for cover with the noise of flak, machine gun and plane attack, hiding under the bridge, weather temperature, motor barge, rocket firing Typhoons.
Attack launch of rockets and attack on the bridge and motor barge, man and girl hurt, the explosions and black smoke, assisting wreckage and Dutch survivors, anger and despair, first aid, Dutch forced to assist the Germans, tanks, arrival of darkness, finding help with staff doctor who helped, bridge crossing, hiding in foliage, weather conditions, finding shelter in a small village only to find Hungarian soldiers lodging in the barns, sleeping in the open with animals, looking for food sustenance finding none tired having do drink dirty water and thoughts on past memories of red cross parcels and food, then the Dutch man who they had helped came past in a cart to tell them that the girl had been taken care of by nuns and he had managed to salvage from the barge food dissented for high ranking German officers, given some as a token for helping him and then to find it of Russian origin and only to find that it was caviar.
