Training as a pilot started at No. 9 Elementary Flying School, followed by No. 33 Elementary Flying Training School, No. 34 Service Flying Training School, No. 4 Elementary Flying Training School, 32 Operational Training Unit, 15 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit, No. 1 Beam Approach School, 11 Operational Training Unit, 1651 Heavy Conversion Unit, 1657 Heavy Conversion Unit and No. 3 Lancaster Finishing School. Posted to 149 Squadron for operations in February 1945.
Served at RCAF Boundary Bay, RCAF Caron, RCAF Medicine Hat, RAF Brough, RAF Ossington, RAF Babdown Farm, RAF Watchfield, RAF Oakley, RAF Westcott, RAF Stradishall, RAF Wratting Common, RAF Feltwell, RAF Methwold.
Aircraft flown were Tiger Moth, Fairchild Cornell, Harvard, Anson, Wellington, Oxford, Stirling, Lancaster I, Lancaster III.
With 149 Squadron Hicks flew 18 bombing operations (15 day and 3 night). His targets were Wesel, Osterfeld, Gelsenkirchen, Kamen, Dortmund, Wanne-Eickel, Hattingen, Hamm, Merseburg, Kiel, Helgoland and Munich.
He also flew 4 Operation Manna (Rotterdam, The Hague, and Gouda) and 4 Operation Exodus (Juvincourt) and 3 Baedeker/Cook’s Tours.
