Description

A coloured booklet of text and photographs describing the loss of Wellington R1397 on a return flight from an operation to Emden. The Wellington crashed at Kleiterp [Klaeiterp] near Bozum and the crew were killed. Identification was not possible and they were buried at the Northern Cemetery in Leeuwarden. The aircraft and crew were identified in post-war research and a commemorative plaque was unveiled in 2011. The aircraft was shot down by the German pilot Helmut Lent. Head and shoulders photographs of Lent and the crew of R1397 are included.
The crew were:
Pilot Officer Mervyn Sydney Lund (pilot);
Sergeant Arthur Edward Owen (pilot);
Sergeant John James Cox (Air Observer);
Sergeant Frank Gordon Walker (Gunner);
Sergeant Alfred John Le Poidevin (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner);
Sergeant Roy Penry Williams (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner).

The booklet also describes the role of the Stichting Missing Airmen Memorial Foundation in identifying and commemorating the crew and crash site.

Details are provided of a website that provides an overview of all locations in Friesland where aircraft crashed or made emergency landings.
