Norman Hamment’s RAF Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book from 24 June 1942 to 7 November 1944, recording training, operations and instructional duties as an Air Gunner.
He was stationed at RAF Morpeth (No. 4 Air Gunnery School), RAF Syerston (61 Squadron), RAF Scampton (No. 1485 Target Towing and Gunnery Flight), RAF Bruntingthorpe (No. 29 Operational Training Unit), RAF Bourn (97 Squadron), RAF Downham Market (635 Squadron), RAF Moreton-in-Marsh (No. 21 Operational Training Unit). Aircraft flown: Botha, Lancaster, Manchester, Whitley, Wellington.
Records two competed tours: first tour with 61 Squadron, 31 operations (29 night, 2 day, plus 5 not completed/recalled).Targets in Czech Republic, France, Germany and Italy were: Duisburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Wismar, Pomeranian Bay (mine laying), Aachen, Osnabruck, Kiel, Cologne, Le Creusot, Genoa, Milan, Turin, Mannheim, Baltic (mine laying), Essen, Berlin, Lorient, St Nazaire, Pilsen, Spezia.
His pilots on 61 Squadron operations were: P/O Meagher, F/Sgt Cockshott, S/Ldr Ward-Hunt and S/Ldr Cecil.
Second tour with 97 and 635 Squadrons, 30 operations (25 night, 5 day, plus one not completed). Targets in Poland, France, Germany, Italy and Belgium were: Stettin, Brunswick, Berlin, Magdeburg, Frankfurt, Augsburg, Stuttgart, Nuremburg, Rouen, Laon, Karlsruhe, Essen, Friedrichshafen, Malines, Haines-St Pierre, Orleans, Aachen, Rennes, Middel Straete, Wizernes, Coquereau, Caen, L’Hey, Nucourt, Vaires.
His pilots on 97 Squadron operations were: Flight Lieutenant Owen, Pilot Officer Edwards, Flight Lieutenant Snell; and on 635 squadron operations: Flight Lieutenant Snell , Pilot Officer Weaver, Flight Lieutenant Gillmore and Wing Commander Brookes.
