Title
Two photographs - 106 Squadron crews
Description
Top - a large group of aircrew standing on taxiway with Manchesters in the background. Submitted with caption 'Members of No. 106 Sqn RAF, including the Commanding Officer, W/Cdr Guy Gibson (standing middle, front row), celebrate at RAF Coningsby after Operation Millennium, the the first ‘Thousand Bomber’ mission to Cologne. The squadron's Manchesters, in the course of being replaced by Lancasters, are in the background. N.B. Gibson did not participate in this mission as he had been hospitalised two weeks earlier at RAF Rauceby'. Bottom - seven aircrew wearing tunics with brevet sitting and standing. Submitted with caption 'A group of seven aircrew, four at rear and three in front. Annotated "Back row. Sgt G. Parker F/Sgt Mclean Sgt Hagil? Sgt Nicol Front row. Sgt Bell? F/O Boivin Sgt Bryson? Nav. KIA Koningsberg Aug 29/30 1944 ND331 ZN-G". To clear up the question marks, 106 Sqn ORB confirms the crew as F/O LC Boivin (pilot), Sgt S Bell (F/E), Sgt WS Bryson (Nav), F/Sgt JP Nicol (B/A), F/Sgt PN McLean (Aus) (WOP), Sgt GE Parker (MUG), Sgt A Hargill (RG). The photo annotation regarding the operation and the aircraft loss is correct but two of the crew, Bell and Nicol were POW with the others KIA'.
