Description
Glyn Owens joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve in 1939 and trained as a pilot. Posted to 61 Squadron at RAF Hemswell in early 1941, he flew Hampdens on operational sorties as both navigator and pilot. Glyn’s first operation was an operation to Düsseldorf in March 1941, followed by minelaying off Brest and further attacks on Brest and Kiel.
On 7 July 1941, Glyn took part in a night operation to Munchen Gladbach. The aircraft was attacked and shot down by a German night fighter over Holland in the early hours of 8 July. Glyn and two crewmates were killed; only the pilot survived as a prisoner of war. He is buried at Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Nijmegen.
