Description

F Sowerby’ Flying Log Book from 31st December 1942 until 16th April 1945. During this time trained as a bomb aimer and air gunner. Trained at No. 31 Bombing and Gunnery School, No. 33 Air Navigation School, No. 3 (Observers) Advanced Flying Unit, 29 Operational Training Unit, 1660 Heavy Conversion Unit and No. 5 Lancaster Finishing School. Posted to 9 Squadron for operations in March 1944.
Attended Air Armament School in August 1944 and continued with 9 Squadron.

Served at RCAF Picton, RCAF Mount Hope, RAF Bobbington, RAF Halfpenny Green, RAF Bruntingthorpe, RAF Swinderby, RAF Syerston, RAF Bardney, RAF Manby.

Aircraft flown were Anson, Bolingbroke, Wellington, Stirling, Lancaster V, Lancaster X.
With 29 Operational Training Unit, Sowerby flew one night leaflet dropping operation to La Fleche. His pilot was Squadron Leader Pooley.
On operations with 9 Squadron he flew 33 bombing operations (9 day and 24 night). His targets were Berlin, Aulnoye, Essen, Nuremberg, Toulouse, Tours, Aachen, La Chapelle, Munich, Schweinfurt, Saint-Medard-en-Jalles, Lille, Bourg-Leopold, Brunswick, Eindhoven, Chatellerault, Watten, Vitry-le-Francois, Brest, La Pallice, Ijmuiden, Kafjord, Tromso, Paderborn, Arnsberg, Pilsen. His pilots were Squadron Leader Pooley, Flight Lieutenant Lake, Flying Officers Ayrton and Barrowman.

On 11th September 1944 flew to Archangel, Russia to attack the Tirpitz in the Kafjord on the .15th. Flew back to England on the 17th. Carried out a further operation to the Tirpitz on 12th November 1944.
