Description
John Cromie’s Royal Australian Air Force Flying Log Book from 17th September 1942 until 23rd May 1956. During this time trained as a wireless operator and air gunner. Trained in Australia at No. 1 Wireless Air Gunner’s School, No. 3 Bombing and Gunnery School, before being posted to England to No. 2 (Observers) Advanced Flying Unit in April 1943. Next postings were to 27 Operational Training Unit and, 1656 Conversion Unit. Operational posting to 460 (RAAF) Squadron in September 1943. In November posted to 550 Squadron but listed as missing on first operation with them on 2nd December. Became a prisoner of war from 3rd December until 23rd April 1945. Discharged 23rd May 1946. Served at RAAF Ballarat, RAAF Sale, RAF Millom, RAF Lichfield, RAF Church Broughton, RAF Lindholme. Aircraft flown were CAC Wackett, Hawker Demon, Battle, Anson, Wellington III, Wellington X, Halifax, Oxford, Lancaster I, Lancaster III, C-47 Dakota. Carried out 1 leafleting night operation with 27 Operational Training Unit. With 460 Squadron flew 11 operations (1 minelaying and 10 bombing night). His targets were Gironde Estuary, Mannheim, Munich, Hagen, Ludwigshafen, Stuttgart, Hannover, Modane, Berlin. On 18th October 1943 whilst on an operation to Hannover his aircraft was attacked by an Me 109 fighter and he was injured in the leg. With 550 Squadron he flew only 1 night bombing operation but was shot down and became a prisoner of war. His pilot for all his operations was Warrant Officer Collier.
