James Bibby’s Flying Log Book from 8th February 1941 until 25th June 1945. During this time trained as a wireless operator and air gunner.
Trained at No. 2 Signals School, No. 2 Air Gunners School, 17 Operational Training Unit, 28 Operational Training Unit, 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit. Posted to 51 Squadron for operations in December 1942 as a wireless operator. In July 1943 posted to 617 Squadron.
In June 1944 posted to 16 Operational Training Unit as a staff wireless operator.
Served at RAF Yatesbury, RAF Pembrey, RAF Upwood, RAF Wymeswold, RAF Riccall, RAF Snaith, RAF Coningsby, RAF Woodhall Spa.
Aircraft flown were Dominie, Proctor, Blenheim, Anson, Wellington, Halifax, Lancaster.
Carried out 16 night bombing and 1 night minelaying operations with 51 Squadron. Targets were Lorient, Hamburg, Wilhelmshaven, Stuttgart, Saint-Nazaire, Duisburg, Kiel, Berlin, Frankfurt, Pilsen, Kattegat, Essen, Dusseldorf, Bochum. His pilots for these operations were Flight Lieutenant Clayton, Flying Officer Johnstone and Warrant Officer Leeper.
With 617 Squadron he flew 11 night bombing operations. Targets included Arquata Scrivia, Leghorn, Anthéor Viaduct and other specialist targets in France. His pilots for these operations was Flight Lieutenant Clayton.
