Robert Francis’ Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book from 5th Octboer 1939 until 23rd May 1943. During this time he served as a wireless operator, air gunner and bomb aimer. Trained at No. 4 Air Observers School. Posted to 149 Squadron for operations. In December 1940 attached to Central Gunnery School for further training and then No. 3 Group Gunnery Training Flight as an Instructor.
In May 1943 posted to Air Armaments School as bomb aimer/air gunner.

Served at RAF West Freugh, RAF Mildenhall.

Aircraft flown were Heyford, Wellington, Hampden, Blenheim.

He flew 35 operations with 149 Squadron (6 day, 29 night). These were mainly bombing operations but also included North Sea sweeps and reconnaissance operations. Other than listing the North Sea, Helgoland and attacking warships the log book does not record any other targets.

He flew as an air gunner on his first 22 operations and then as wireless operator for the remainder.

His pilots were Wing Commander Kellett, Squadron Leaders Dabinett, Collett, Kerr, and Pilot Officer Davies.
