Dear G.L.

How gratified it was to me to discover your article in the February issue of our Polaris. This is a publication put out bimonthly by US Submarine Veterans of WWI

It is not my intent to write a very detailed letter. I simply want to establish the fact with you that there [inserted] are [/inserted] a few of us living yet. [submarine sketch] of more 80 years old last Sept. 11 2001. And there are several others that are about my age that are still living. I would not be surprised if you do hear from any or all of them.

Please tell me where you were that we missed our attempt to rescue you. Admiral Nimitz son, Chester W. Nimitz Jn., headed the

rescue party. But unfortunately, it came back empty handed. Incidentally, he passed away at 86 years of age last January 1st or 2nd. He retired a Captain in 1958, and through a paper promotion, advanced to Rear Admiral upon his retirement.

I wish it would be our good fortune to get together in the future. I am English by descent, and I naturally love and admire the English.

My memory of this event has grown somewhat dim. But I seem to recall that we were looking for about 18 “RAF” men, and 4 or 5 men were in the party that went ashore to search for you.

or Northern (at that time) Dutch East Indies, or just where it is.

Now just a little about me. I got discharged in July 1946. Got married the following Nov 2nd I’ve [inserted] been [/inserted] married 55 years, have 5 Children, and 9 Grandchildren.
