Description

J T Pickford’s Flying Log Book covering the period from 13 November 1939 to 08 May 1945, detailing his training and operations flown as Air Gunner. He was stationed at RAF Evanton (8 Air Observer’s School), RAF North Weald, Northolt, Manston, Gravesend & Middle Wallop (604 Squadron).He was shot down in May 1940 aircrfat crashed near The Hague, He escaped and evaded back to England. Later served at RAF Finningley (25 OTU), RAF Waddington, Bottesford, Syerston, Langar & Spilsby (207 Squadron), RAF Scampton (5 Group Training Flight) and RAF Dunholme Lodge & Fulbeck (1485 Bombing Gunnery Flt). Aircraft flown in were Harrow, Wallace, Battle, Blenheim IF, Wellington, Manchester, Lancaster, Lysander, Martinet, Oxford and B-24 Liberator. He flew from 24 December 1939 to 22 October 1940 as an Air Gunner on night fighter Blenheims. He then flew on one day and 59 night operations with 207 Squadron (total 60). Targets were Essen, Hüls, Kiel, mining not specified, Cologne, Aachen, Rennes (leaflets), Frisian Isles mining, Emden, Lorient, Rostock, mining Fanø Island, Bremen, mining Great Belt, Wilhelmshaven, Danzig, Vegesack, Hamburg, Saarbrucken, Dusseldorf, Mainz, Kassel, Nuremburg, Karlsruhe, Duisburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Wismar, mining Danzig, Tours, Berlin, Leipzig, Stuttgart, La Chapelle, Mailly-le-Camp, Antwerp, Saint-Valery-en-Caux, La Pernelle, Caen, Aunay-sur-Odon, Wesseling, Marquise-Mimoyecques, Saint-Leu-d'Esserent and Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. He also flew one prisoner of war repatriation sortie. His pilots on operations were Flying Officer Herring and Squadron Leader Pattinson.
