Description

J Savill’s Flying Log Book from 14th April 1939 until 12th May 1946.

Training started at No. 3 Air Observers’ School, followed by posting to 78 Squadron in September 1939. Further training at the School of Air Navigation before returning to 78 Squadron. In May 1940 posted to 77 Squadron for operations as front gunner and bomb aimer.

In September 1940 posted to 10 Operational Training Unit and then 419 Flight ferrying agents to occupied countries. In October posted to No. 3 Radio Maintenance Unit/Radio Servicing Section carrying out radar calibration flights. Posted to No. 72 Signals Wing in February 1941 and then No. 75 Signals Wing in September. Next posting was to 527 Squadron continuing radar calibration duties.

In November 1944 posted to the Empire Air Navigation School. March 1945 saw a return to 527 Squadron and calibration duties.

Demobilised in May 1946.

Served at RAF Sywell, RAF Aldergrove, RAF Dishforth, RAF Linton-on-Ouse, RAF St. Athan, RAF Driffield, RAF Kinloss, RAF North Weald, RAF Stapleford Tawney, RAF Abingdon, RAF Usworth, RAF Drem, RAF Ouston, RAF Biggin Hill, RAF Fowlmere, RAF Snailwell, RAF Castle Camps, RAF Digby, RAF Shawbury, RAF Watton.

Aircraft flown were Anson, Heyford, Whitley, Lysander, Magister, Blenheim, Hornet Moth, Oxford, Wellington III, Stirling, Martinet, Dominie, Wellington X.

Savill flew 26 night bombing operations with 77 Squadron. His targets were Stavanger, Hannover, Euskirchen, Bavay, Hamm, Soest, Hirson, Bapaume, Turin, Reims, Gelsenkirchen, Duisburg, Mannheim, Höchst, Brussels, Bremen, Bordeaux, Augsburg.
His pilots were Flying Officer Pryde, Wing Commander Appleton, Pilot Officer Meade, Wig Commander Macdonald, Pilot Officer North, Sergeant Coogan.
