A list of my fathers medals awarded for his wartime service:
1. Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) – awarded to non-commissioned personnel for ‘exceptional valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy’.
2. 1939-1945 Star (awarded for at least 60 days overseas service, which means based overseas, not just flying over other countries) – I don’t know of any service overseas for Dad during the WWII – perhaps merits some further investigation).
3. Air Crew Europe Star (with a clasp for France and Germany –signifies at least one operational sortie over France and over Germany between D-Day and end of WWII in Europe)
4. Defence Medal (awarded for 3 yrs non-operational service in UK during WWII –e.g training, headquarters in UK or 1 yr non-operational service overseas or 180 days non-operational service overseas in area with high risk of, or subject to, air attack.
5. War Medal (awarded to full-time personnel in all branches of the UK Armed Forces with at least 28 days service during WWII)
6. Air Efficiency Award (awarded for 10 years continuous service in RAFVR. Service during WWII counted treble time – i.e 1 year WWII service counted as 3 yrs towards the 10 years’ service required, etc.).
