Glad to hear they were alright. mentions conditions in England, blackout, no road signs and soldiers everywhere. Comments on his volunteering filling sandbags. Continues to describe his activities, including having a married couple in the house as well as another possible child billeted with them. Mentions contact with his tutor at Cambridge and putting his name on university recruiting board. Goes on with other family and other issues due to the beginning of the war. Says they would be better of in France. Continues with more descriptions of his activities.
