28 Elementary Flying Training School was established at RAF Mount Hampden in 1941 as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme. The school provided basic and more advanced training for aircrew for the South African Air Force, RAF and Allied air forces during the war. Tiger Moths, Cornells and Harvards were used.
