The site at RAF Forres was used initially as a satellite station to RAF Kinloss 4 miles (6 kms) to the north-east. 19 OTU had been established at RAF Kinloss in May 1940 to train Bomber Command aircrew using Ansons and Whitleys. However in January 1941 D Flight from 19 OTU moved permanently to RAF Forres. In 1944 the Whitleys were replaced by Wellingtons. The station was also used as a satellite for the Advanced Flying Unit at RAF Dalcross. Activity ceased at RAF Forres in October 1944 when 19 OTU fully returned to RAF Kinloss. From November 1944 to 1947 the site served as a prisoner of war camp.
