Title

Fahrt ins Blaue – ist Fahrt in den Tod
Journey into the unknown is a journey to your death

Description

Correspondence from the Emergency Association of German Bomb Victims in Munich, dated September 1943, outlines the difficulties facing the large numbers of bomb victims evacuated to host territories in the east.

Problems include a lack of accommodation and the circulation of many diseases, with little medical provision. They are also faced with persecution from the Polish population, angered by the SS’s extermination of their relatives.

It suggests that party officials do not want the bomb victims on their own doorsteps as it is a reminder of what they have caused. They also do not send their own families to the east.

One solution, taken by refugees from Hamburg, is to chose instead to go into the countryside where they have been fed and accommodated by farmers and landowners. People are urged to the same.
