Operational loss of Wellington T2703

Description

A report of the shooting down of Wellington T2703 by Feldwebel Karl-Heinz Scherfling whilst on an operation to Bremen, Germany. The Wellington crashed onto the railway line at Haren-Ems railway station. Observer, Pilot Officer Hargrave McCosh and air gunner Sergeant Thomas Ross McWalter died due to the incident and both are buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery. Second pilot, Sergeant Edward Fleet Duncombe, was wounded and became a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft 6. Pilot, Sergeant B C Kelly became a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft 1, Stalag Luft 6 and Camp No.357. Sergeant B J Moore and Sergeant R Mount were prisoners of war in Camp No.357.
