V-PARADE AT GAYDON

Today, to commemorate the Battle of Britain, fought 18 years ago, the R.A.F. has an Open Day at Gaydon, Warwickshire. Stories of the station and pictures of the aircraft on view are on Pages 5, 7 and 8.

A FLY-PAST of Britain’s V-bombers was planned as the spectacular highlight of today’s Battle of Britain air display at Gaydon R.A.F. station, near Warwick.

Here three of them – left to right the Victor, Vulcan and Valiant are seen against a dramatic backcloth of sky which, to pilots flying at considerable altitudes, changes gradually in colour from blue to deep purple.

V-bomber crews are trained at Gaydon.

Weather men on the station forecast bright periods for the display, with a risk of showers in between. A crowd of about 100,000 is expected.

The financial success of the day is already virtually assured. An intensive drive to sell programmes, the proceeds of which go to R.A.F charities, had brought in nearly £2,000 up to yesterday.

The station was open to the public during the morning.
