Francais! Savez-vous ce qui s’est passé à Oran?

This leaflet, which is addressed to the French, sets out to clarify what it purports to be the true situation in Oran. It denounces their government’s claim about the ultimatum given to General Gensoul and outlines the two options it states were given to the French units at Mers-el-Kébir and Oran.
It points out that Germany had already announced on German radio that it would not hesitate to use the French fleet against the English. It decries the Vichy government and Marshal PŽtain for resisting the allies and their willingness to spill French blood for Germany.

VOTRE GOUVERNEMENT VOUS A DIT que l’amiral anglais avait remis à l’amiral Gensoul un ultimatum le sommant ou bien de se rallier à la flotte anglaise ou bien de detruire ses bâtiments dans un délai de 6 heures:

LA VERITÉ, LA VOICI:

Le 3 juillet l’amiral français a reçu des mains d’un officier britannique un document déclarant que, la Grande-Bretagne se trouvant dans l’impossibilité de laisser les navires français tomber aux mains des Allemands ou des Italiens, le gouvernement britannique demandait aux unités françaises à Mers el Kebir et à Oran de choisir une des solutions suivantes:

SOIT de continuer la lutte contre les Allemands et les Italiens aux côtés des Alliés jusqu’à la victoire.

SOIT de se rendre à la Martinique ou dans un port britannique, pour y être demilitarisées [sic], les équipages devant être repatriés dans le plus bref délai.

Le document précisait en outre que [italics] quelle que soit la decision adoptée, [/italics] les bâtiments seraient rendus à la France à la fin de la guerre.

C’était seulement dans le cas ou the commandement français opposerait un refus à toutes ces propositions honorables que le gouvernement britannique lui donnerait à grand regret l’ordre de détruire ses bâtiments.

L’amiral français a fait connaître au commandement anglais son intention de se battre. Voulait-il donc remettre ses bâtiments au pouvoir des Allemands?

VOTRE GOUVERNEMENT VOUS A DIT que l’Allemagne n’exigeait pas la livraison de la flotte française mais seulement sa démobilisation et son rassemblement dans des ports français.

OR, RETENEZ BIEN CECI:

L’Allemagne a déjà renié sa parole. Dès le 1er juillet la Radio allemande déclarait que, s’il en voyait la nécessité, Hitler n’hésiterait pas un instant à utiliser la flotte française [italics] contre les Anglais [/italics]. L’affaire d’Oran vous en apporte une preuve.

Sous la pression allemande le gouvernement de Vichy a donné au commandement français l’ordre de résister aux alliés de la France, à ceux qui combattent pour la France et qui sont animés de le volonté inébranlable de la libérer du joug étranger.

FRANÇAIS!

Le maréchal Pétain a declaré qu’il avait abandonné la lutte parce qu’il ne voulait plus sacrifier inutilement des vies françaises. Son gouvernement qui refusait hier de faire couler le sang français pour la France vient sciemment de le faire couler pour l’Allemagne.

Here are the facts!

Judge for yourself . . .

Your Government told you that the English Admiral gave Admiral Gensaul an ultimatum that either he joined the English fleet or the ships would be destroyed within six hours.

Here is the truth:

On 3 July the French Admiral received from the hands of a British Officer a document stating that Great Britain found it impossible to let the French Navy fall into the hands of the Germans or the Italians, the British Government asked French units at Mers el Kebir and Oran to chose one of the following:

Either to continue the fight against the Germans and Italians on the side of the Allies [deleted symbol] until victory came

Or to go to Martinique, or a British port, to be demilitarized, the crews being repatriated without delay.

The document stated that whichever decision was adopted the ships would be returned to France at the end of the war.

Only if the French Command refused to accept one of these honourable propositions would the British Government regretfully order the destruction of the ships.

The French Admiral made known to the English Command his intention to fight on. [three words deleted] Did he then intend to let his ship fall into the hands of the Germans?

Your Government told you that Germany would not demand delivery of the French Fleet; only [deleted] that [/deleted] it’s demoblisation and that it returned to French ports.

However Rember [sic] this:

Germany has already broken its word. On 1 July German radio declared that if he saw the necessity Hitler, would not hesitate for an [sic] moment to use the French fleet against the English. The Oran affair proves that under German pressure the Vichy Government gave the French Command an order to resist the [deleted] Allies [/deleted] allies of France, those that fight for France and have the indominable will to throw off the foreign yoke.

Marshal Petain stated that he had abandoned the fight because he did not wish to sacrifice further French lives. [deleted letter] His Government yesterday refused to shed French blood for France [deleted] but inadvent [/deleted] but ultimately must let it be shed for Germany.
