WENDOVER
Red Cross Dance. – An outstandingly successful dance was held at the Public Hall on Wednesday week, in aid of the Prisoners of War Fund. The sum of £25 was realised, after all expenses had been met. Novelties, prizes and fun were the order, and in a very short time everyone felt that they were participating in a grand family party. Corporals Henry Howard and Wallie Okin, of the R.A.F., the popular well-known couple who are noted for their outstanding organising ability in all matters of entertainment, conducted affairs as joint masters of ceremonies with masterly ease and accomplishment. Music throughout the evening was by the R.A.F. Dance orchestra, under the direction of Sergt. Carter, by kind permission of the Air Officer Commanding. The band worked hard, playing numerous requests and made themselves deservedly popular with the dancers. Many useful and attractive prizes were given away during the evening. The generosity of Wendover tradesmen was again apparent in the plentiful supply of refreshments and in the prizes supplementing those supplied by the Red Cross and St. John’s Sports Committee. Mr. John Wixon was the promoter of the dance and in addition to his own untiring efforts is to be congratulated on finding such a willing and efficient band of helpers, performing diverse and important functions, who made the dance such an assured success. These good people included Mrs J. Wixon, Mrs J. Saunders, the Misses E. and N. Saunders, Miss N. Wixon, Mrs. H. Floyd, Corporals Hyslop and Peters, of the R.A.F. Mrs. H. Howard, Mrs. W. Okin and Mr. J. Relton.
