B. [underlined] STARTING AND RUNNING UP DRILL. [/underlined]

(1) When the Pilot has been informed that the gournd crew have primed the engines ready for starting he is to say “Contact starboard outer”. The Flight Engineer is to report “Contact Starboard outer”, switch on main ignition switch booster coil and press starter motor button for not more than 10 Secs. The Pilot is to control the throttles, care being taken not to pump handle , until the engines start, when he is to open up to 1,000 r.p.m. In the case of Lanc. III’s as soon as each engine starts F/E turns cut off switch to on. The same procedure is to be carried out for the remaining engines from right to left. When all engines have been started the Flight Engineer is to say “All engines running”, and he is to:-

(a) Switch off booster coil.
(b) Change petrol selector cocks to No. 1 (inner) tanks if fitted with stack pipes.
(c) Tell W,Op.A.g to turn main switch to FLIGHT.
(d) Check oil pressure and temperature.

The pilot is to switch D.R. Compass to on and setting. Test flaps.

(2) When each engine is sufficiently warmed up oil temperature 15 ͦC. cooloant 60 ͦC the F/E is to open the radiator flaps and say Starboard Outer O.K. to run up”. The Pilot is to repeat “Starboard Outer” and run up the engine as follows:-

(i) With pitch lever in fully fine run up to 2500 revs. Push levers into fully course (1800 revs) then bring levers back to fully fine checking that they return to 1500 revs.
(ii) Test magneto switches at 2500 maximum drop 150 revs. Optional.
(iii) Open up to +4 lbs. boost test two speed supercharge in S gear boost should rise and the oil pressure drop.
(iv) Open throttles up to the gate check boost +9 lbs, and revs, 2850.
[indecipherable letter] & test ignition switches (optional) [symbol] [missing words]
(v) Throttle back to 2500 revs. test magneto again. Before taxying out turn cockpit lights off and make sure that the F/E has the Aldis lamp plugged in and that it is held in position ready for taxying.

C. [underlined] INTERCOM CHECK. [/underlined]

The Captain is to call each member of the crew who is to report on his equipment. The oxygen is to be turned to 30,000 ft. and the crew are to check it, this is to be done by holding the oxygen tube close to the eyes or ear. There should be 3 – 4 puffs per minute.

[underlined] CAPTAIN. [Capt.] CREW MEMBER. [Crew] [/underlined]

(a) [Capt.] “Pilot”. [Crew] “Engines O.K.”
(b) [Capt.] “Air Bomber”. [Crew] “Photoleads O.K. Bomb sight O.K. Bomb selector O.K. Turret O.K. Feed clear, Oxygen O.K. and connected”
(c ) [Capt.] “Navigator” [Crew] “Instruments and lights O.K. TR 1335 set off Oxygen O.K. and connected.”

[underlined] II – TAXYING POST CHECK (VITAL ACTIONS) [/underlined]

The drill is T.F.P.F.F.S. and is to be memorised by both Pilot and F/E. The pilot is to repeat each item as it is checked and the F/E is to remind the Pilot immediately if a check is missed out.

(i) T – Trimming tabs. Set at 8, pilot to put his hand as far round the front of the trimming wheel as possible then take one pull back to bring his hand to the top of the wheel, this should bring the setting to 8.
(ii) F – Friction not tight.
(iii) P – Pitch fully fine – High revs.
(iv) F – Fuel all master cocks on. Selector cocks on No. 2 (Centre) tanks. All immersion pumps on.
(v) F – Flaps – 15 ͦ. lightly loaded, 25 ͦ heavily loaded.
(vi) S – Supercharger in M gear.
(vii) Brake pressure not below 150 lbs.
[missing bracket]viii) D.R. Compass to normal.
(ix) Pitot head heater on. The F/E is then to check and say:-
“Engine temperatures and pressures O.K.”.

[underlined] III TAKE-OFF DRILL. [/underlined]

The Pilot is to have his microphone mask securely fitted on and on transmit.

The Flight Engineer is to repeat all orders given to him by the Pilot but [missing letter]s not to make the executive action until a pause of about five seconds has elapsed. [missing letter]his pause gives the pilot an opportunity to check the repetition or to cancel his [misising letter]rder in emergency.

When in take off position the pilot is to:-
(1) Taxy forward to straighten out the tail wheel.
(2) Set directional gyro to 0.
(3) Set P4 compass red on red.
(4) Switch off cockpit lights.
(5) Switch off radiator flaps.
