[sic] Had booked squash court for this evening although I do not feel like playing. However I played Fletcher again & thoroughly enjoyed it.
Tuesday 23
Long talked of Maths exam was held this morning. 7 questions in 2 hrs. Really quite easy & finished before time. Should have got required 80 percent as answers agree with others. Phoned Cynthia to arrange for further meeting this week but was out. Stayed in tonight to write letters etc. Phoned Cynthia again & got thro’ this time.
Wednesday 24
Ordered to refill our mattresses after 1st parade. All went down to basement & kicked up no end of a shindy amongst the straw & the air was quite unbreathable. Cleared up rooms after this for CO’s inspection. Political situation looks bad this morning looks as though Chamberlain will resign although voting was for present government. Had afternoon off today for packing – spent day getting clearance sheets signed etc. Dad sent me a cutting showing that Signals Officers are still wanted. Might be a good idea to apply.
Friday 10
Astounding news this morning that Germany has attacked Holland and Belgium Now for fireworks! Had exams all day long then left for home on way to Hullavington Heard Dutch & Belgian ambassadors speak sounded very bitter. Chamberlain resigns his post. Churchill now prime minister. 100 German planes brought down in Holland to day.

Monday 13
Had first trip in an Anson today – seems pretty collossal [sic] but relatively easy to fly. Greatest difficulty in operation of all the gadgets in correct sequence. [indecipherable word] is used for this the word being PRAFTS. Instructor is flight commander – seems quite decent & doesn’t swear – yet.
Tuesday 14
Had second trip in an Anson today can fly & land alright but cockpit drill takes some getting used to. My Instructor Fl Lt. Hoggarth is very decent.
Wednesday 15
Had solo test today with F. Lt. Mitchelmore made rather a mess of it – let flaps up when taking off again without landing – lasted 50 mins. Went solo & got caught in rainstorm. These machines are not too good to see out of in rain.

Quite an interesting experience. The ground seems to be just a black void in the blackout – would be terrible to lose sight of the flare path. Got on quite well.
Wednesday 29
Got 1 hr off this morning for last nights night flying. Volunteers called for this afternoon for rifle party (twin engine pilots) & machine gun party (singles) for dealing with parachute troops. First Raid Sun Nov 10th ‘40
Primary target Oil plant at Ruhland
Secondary oil tanks at Bremen.
Crew. W. Commander Smith Capt
Self 2nd Pilot
Sgt. Wilson Navigator
Sgt Sumpner Wireless Op.
Sgt Goodwill Rear gunner.
At 1600 hrs got dressed in flying kit & we were driven out to all or aircraft 6 of 102 Sqdn 4 of 58 Sqdn. Felt rather like cattle going to slaughter. Took off without any ditches by 16.30 hrs. got well away climbing to about 7000’ & crossing coast at Flamborough Head. I manned gun in front turret during all this period over the sea as it was still light & there was danger of meeting hun fighters. When about 100 mls from Dutch coast ran into an Occlusion which
[page break]
we expected. Flying at about 10000’ we were completely blind & it was snowing very heavily. In front turret I became smothered in powdery snow which fell round my collar melting & becoming uncomfortable. There were many electrical phenomena blue sparks flying outwards from metal parts of turret the gun and pitot head with catherine wheels round aircrews. Broke through occlusion shortly after Dutch coast & pinpointed ourselves by several lakes. By now had decided to attack Bremen as weather was so bad and motors cut on using cold air to carburettors. I flew some of the time out but when A.A. became hotter the “Winco” took over. Picked out R. Edse & followed down to Bremen. On making run up anti aircraft fire became so intense & we were held by about 12 searchlights that we were unable to drop bombs on actual target but they must have hit docks instead. The AA fire was so
[page break]
close that the aircraft literally rocked & bumped very vigorously. The Winco took severe avoiding action & we ultimitely [sic] seemed to break clear of it all near the river mouth. I took over again at Dutch coast & flew home above cloud & through the same occlusion. Finally we QDM’d to Linton slightly overshooting. Got in touch with Regional Control on TR9 and broke cloud at about 4000’ at beacon. Flew to light at Linton where the ‘Winco’ took over & landed.
Discovered two small holes in aircraft on following morning
[page break]
Monday 11
Had another slack day Visited Clements’ friends the Conyers again & had supper there & afterwards saw Fred Astaire – Broadway Melody of 1940 – quite good.
Tuesday 12
Not down in todays crews. Flew with Sgt Kerr on an air test in morning & he shot up Malton. Dad phoned up from Leeds in afternoon & I went over & spent evening with him & went to a show. Stamp came to Leeds too. 102 & 58 Sqdns operating tonight [symbol] One of 102 Sqdns machines got a hit in fuselage & complete side of aircraft blown out absolutely amazing that it could fly back. Caught flares alight too but Wireless opp. put it out. Should be some decorations
Wednesday 13
Exceedingly quiet day as 58 sqdn were operating last night. Out of 9 only 4 got away as all rest were u/s for varying reasons. Flew with Sgt Kerr this afternoon – he flew practising Lorenz landings. These were not too successful as system wasn’t functioning properly. We took off with flaps down once – [inserted] by mistake [/inserted] very dangerous but we got off O.K.

Saturday 11
Had lie in & nice morning at home. Left about 2.30 pm. Could not wait for Barbara & Jack Arrived Hullavington 6.30. None of the Brough people have turned up tonight
Sunday 12
Up 6.30 – busy day with interviews – issuing of books etc. They seem to be pretty strict with discipline here.

Did a few more circuits & bumps solo today – improving but still a little uncertain. Saw S/L Birchet (CGI) as to the possibility of getting transferred to Signals Branch. He agreed to forward application.
Friday 17
Plenty of flying – practised flying with 1 engine only – can only just maintain height. Did some landings with one engine too. Heard at 12.00 that we had week end leave – however did not get away till 3 pm. Took Andrews with me & had most enjoyable run back. Got back for tea. Heard that Uncle Edgar is dead.
Saturday 18
Had a super day at home again. Dad stayed at home this morning. Went for glorious walk. Started back at 7 pm. Met Andrews at Chorley Wood & travelled back with him
Sunday 19
Full working day. Did dual ht. test & went to 18000 ft – felt a wee bit dull at this ht.

Monday 20
Lectures in morning. Did height test solo this afternoon – super afternoon could see Wales Salisbury & miles around. Stayed at 15000 ft for 1/2 hr. Had to wind in undercart for this – great effort required on an Anson. Finished afternoon with precautionary landings dual with FL. Haggarth. Played tennis with Hemming. Wrote to Aunt Ada & Mary.
Tuesday 21
Did some low flying today – seems a bit queer in these big machines. Also practiced precautionary landings. News rather discouraging today – Germans have advanced to Arras Amiens and are going for channel ports. Had letter from Eddy – he is of same opinion as myself on signals transfer – has applied too.
Wednesday 22
Rather a dull day – cleared up for flying in afternoon Practiced precautionary landings with [inserted] FL LT. [/inserted] Haggarth & Houghton as passenger. Redrafted letter applying for transfer to signals branch – don’t know if this will come off. Political situation little better – Germans knocked out of Arras.

Tuesday 28
Had 15 hr test today with P/O Jones – normally a nasty piece of work but turned out to be most pleasant & he was pleased with test. Had 1st night flight tonight with Hoggarth.
Volunteered & turned up for practice this evening. Actually had bayonet practice – a most foul & objectionable business for any civilised world – did not bargain for this.
