PLANS OF SECRET NAZI FIGHTER SMUGGLED
And down come two of them!
BRITISH bombers, on reconnaissance far out over the North Sea yesterday, fought and whipped a flight of the new Messerschmitt 110 “destroyer” planes.
The British planes – according to Germany no match for the “destroyers” – met the enemy on their outward journey and opened fire immediately.
The running battle lasted half an hour, the bombers, flying in formation, blazing away with all guns on the circling Messerschmitts.
FORCED TO LAND
One British machine was lost. But before he crashed the pilot saw a Messerschmitt go hurtling out of control into the sea.
A second Nazi plane, holed by bullets from nose to tail, had to land in Denmark.
The pilot, unhurt, is to be interned.
When the Messerschmitts gave up the battle and fled the R.A.F. planes continued their patrol.

said only four Messerschmitts attacked nine Bristol-Blenheim bombers, and –
“The British at once turned to escape, and in the chase the Germans shot down three of them. All the Messerschmitts returned safely.”
It was revealed last night: too, that R.A.F. planes bombed the island of Sylt, Nazi seaplane base, late on Tuesday and early yesterday morning.
The Air Ministry statement adds that Danish property near the frontier is reported to have been damaged, and if it is established that British planes caused it full restitution will be made. Reports from Roem say three bombs were dropped.
The official German news agency made no mention yesterday of the attack on Sylt – but they claimed that a British plane dropped bombs on the Danish island of Roem, near Sylt.
They said there was no damage and no casualties but added: “This shows how Great Britain wishes to observe the territorial rights of neutrals.”
Reports from Denmark that R.A.F. planes had bombed the “Hindenburg dam” – the breakwater-highway connecting Sylt with the mainland - were denied by the Air Ministry.
A Nazi plane made a forced landing at Mechelen-sur-Meuse, in the Province of Limburg, Belgium, yesterday, and two officers in it were interned.

KIEL RAID HERO GIVEN BAR TO D.F.C.
SQUADRON LEADER KENNETH CHRISTOPHER DORAN, who received the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism in the Kiel raid the day after Britain declared war, has been awarded a bar to his D.F.C. for a new act of bravery.
The Air Ministry, announcing this yesterday, reported that he led a formation of bombers which were attacked by enemy fighters over the North Sea this month.
“By his clever tactics and gallant leadership”, the report goes on, “he successfully maintained a close, defensive formation throughout the engagement.
“Two of the fighter aircraft were compelled to break off the fight, a third was shot down in flames into the sea, and the rest eventually abandoned the attack.
DETERMINATION
“Although one of our aircraft was lost and a second had to return to its base, Squadron Leader Doran, showing great determination, led the remaining aircraft 130 miles further to his objective.”
Also honoured by the King yesterday was Leading Aircraftman John Tippett, gunner of a bomber formation also attacked by enemy fighters over the North Sea this month.
Of him the Air Ministry report says:-
“As the aircraft held a vulnerable position in the formation, Leading Aircraftman Tippett’s task was one of great danger and responsibility. Yet he showed great skill and coolness in handling his gun and consistently repelling the enemy attacks throughout the engagement.
SCHOOL HOLIDAY
Leading Aircraftman Tippett is 21, was born at Barrow-in-Furness, and worked in a mill in Keighley (Yorkshire) before joining the R.A.F. in March 1937. He has trained as radio operator and air gunner.
When Kenneth Doran received his D.F.C. from the King on November 2 – it was one of the first decorations of the war – his old school, St Albans, celebrated by a half-holiday.
Mr F.M. Walker, a retired house master, of St Albans school, told of the new award yesterday said:
“Good gracious. Doran again! That is marvellous, but no more than one could expect. He was a very fearless boy – very merry, impish.”
