OUTFIT REQUIRED ON APPOINTMENT TO A COMMISSION IN THE ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE

Officers are responsible for obtaining their own outfits. They should obtain an undertaking from the tailor that articles of uniform conform in every respect to the sealed patterns in quality and design held at the Air Ministry, and to the description contained in "Dress Regulations for Officers of the Royal Air Force." Officers are liable to be called upon to replace any article or articles of uniform not conforming to the official sealed pattern.

[italics] Note [/italics] 1. – Officers who wear spectacles when on duty are responsible for providing themselves with a pair having the approved type of flattened side pieces which do not interfere with the wearing of a respirator.

On reporting for duty, officers should bring their civilian gas mask with them.

[italics] Note [/italics] 2. – Canes or sticks of any description will not be carried by officers when in uniform.

[italics] Note [/italics] 3. – Sealed patterns are held for those items marked *, but it is not, however, obligatory for officers to make special purchases of the remaining items if they are already in possession of suitable articles.

Note 4
[italics] Note [/italics] 4. – Officers may be permitted to wear woollen scarves with uniform provided that they are of the correct R.A.F. blue-grey colour and that they are worn unobtrusively by folding one end over the other across the chest and are not tied or knotted. A scarf should be worn in such a manner that only a minimum portion of it is revealed above the collar of the outer garment with which it is worn.

[italics] Note [/italics] 5-1. [italics] Greatcoats, officers'. [/italics] – (i) When worn with the collar turned down, the bottom three buttons on the right side will be fastened and the lapels turned back.

(ii) When worn with the collar turned up, all five buttons on the right side will be fastened. ([italics] Note. [/italics] – The wearing of the collar turned [italics] down [/italics] with all five buttons fastened is restricted to full dress.)

(iii) The belt will be worn outside (except with full dress, when it is worn inside).

(iv) The two buttons in the slit at the back will be kept fastened.

2. [italics] Greatcoats – general instructions to all ranks. [/italics] – (i) The collar is normally to be worn turned down.

(ii) The collar may be worn turned up, in the prescribed manner, in the following circumstances:-
(a) On parade, when specially ordered.
(b) When not on parade during cold and inclement weather.

(iii) The collar may not be worn partially turned up.

3. [italics] Caps, service dress. [/italics] – Caps will be placed evenly on the head.

4. [italics] Caps, field service. [/italics] – These will be worn on the right side of the head so that the lower button is in the centre of the forehead and the edge of the cap is one inch above the centre of the right eyebrow.

5. [italics] Flying badge. [/italics] – The R.F.C. flying badge is obsolete and is not to be worn with R.A.F. uniform.

6. [italics] Footwear. [/italics] – Ankle boots or shoes must conform to the approved patterns.

7. [italics] Jerseys, pull-over. [/italics] – These must be of such a design that no portion is visible at the opening of the roll collar when worn with the service dress jacket.
