Etiquette & Procedure.
you salute the Kings Commission not the uniform or the wearer.
Salute officers on bikes and, in cars if they have seen you.
Hat off, stand to attention during God save the King but do not salute.
When RAF flag is being taken down stand to attention.
Sleeves to be rolled to the elbows when you do not wear jackets.
Do not salute an officer when in a ground sheet.
The Cenotaph must be saluted, also a funeral (civilian).
A military funeral you salute the officer at the head of the procession and stay at the full salute till it has all passed

No particular smell. 4 or 5 mins before realization of being in gas. next time affects in two mins. Shake clothing to remove gas rest, treat for shock (keep warm & sweet tea) if in strong concentration take away any implements for suicide. Non persistant. [sic]
to counteract suicidal effects a glass of whisky or brandy Can give artificial respiration.

Lung Gases.
1/ Phosgene 2/ chlorine & 3/ chloropicrin affect the lungs and are letheal [sic]
1/ smells of musty hay or rotting vegitation [sic]. Vomiting, coughing, spitting frothy blood stained sputum, collapse. Treat as stretcher cases.
Phosgene [inserted] feeling of [/inserted] well being for 24 hrs
Any movement will aggravate lungs. Give them hot sweet tea. no smoking or alcohol. Face purple If in heavy, concentration. Non persistant [sic].
2/ & 3/ more or less same effect.
2 smells of [deleted] chlord [/deleted] chloride of lime
3 smells of amonia [sic].
(Dry land drowning) [underlined] do not [/underlined] give artificial respiration
[underlined] Arsine [/underlined] comes from dk grey powder. calcium arsonide when comes in contact with damp gives off arsine. Non persistant [sic] Faint smell of garlic. affects

through blood stream, breaks down red capusules [sic]. weakness, vomiting, pains, dark brown or black urine.
May not get effects of first concentration nor second, third if light, but will get full effect of all attacks when it does finally affect you.
Gas detectors turn reddish brown.
Use Anti gas ointment on hands freely to protect them when wearing gas clothing.

Mustard & Lewisite, blister gases.
[underlined] Mustard [/underlined] gas, smells of garlic, dark brown oily liquid, accumulitive [sic] effect. Under surface persistancy [sic] hydrorolosis [sic], mustard gas is broken down into its various parts when mixed with water.
Insidious, very persistant [sic].
Two way action affects lungs stomach & breathing passages & also blisters the skin.
Delayed effects.
[underlined] Lewisite. [/underlined] Smells of geraniums contains arscnic. [sic] V. Persistant affects lungs & skin. Dk brown oily liquid. Delayed effects. Mustard vapour on the body will cause redness which may turn to blister 6/12 hrs. Use Anti Gas oniment [sic] & scrub part

affected. In the eyes, tears smarting, great pain, and cannot look at the light:-
Photophobia. Swollen lids & puss comes from between eyelids if in bad concentration.
If in light con. wash eyes out with 1 level teaspoonful salt in 1 pt of water. Wash eyes out often.
On the skin in liquid form, [inserted] in liquid concent. [/inserted] Mop up liquid, burn rag, apply Anti gas ornment [sic], scrub affected part.
In the eyes use same treatment as for vapour.
[underlined] Lewisite [/underlined] vapour will cause redness which may turn to blister. Looks like a weal.

Lewisite Liquid same as Mustard. except that M. blisters are round & flat & L are up, down, up [diagram]
Iodine can be applied after having scrubbed affected part or peroxide.
If clothes are splashed take them off.
Lewisite in the eyes same as mustard, will cause blindness (no hope for eyes).
Mustard can be mixed with B.B.C. and you will only smell B.B.C. Take same precautions

as you would for Mustard in case it has been mixed with BBC.

Linseed oil covering cape.
Gas mask [inserted] slung [/inserted] eyeshields, cap cover with cap back to front, cape on back with string over shoulder.

Apply anti gas oniment [sic] to exposed parts of body. Take out respirator, harness down take off cap & cover and eyeshields put on respirator. replace cap & cover. Fasten haversack, push h.s. to back, put arms through sleeves of cape, fasten cape from bottom up and fasten collar under resp. tube. Put tin of AG oniment [sic] in pocket, rub over with hands first to remove contamination

Shake clothing to remove gas rest, treat for shock (keep warm & sweet tea) if in strong concentration take away any implements for suicide. Non persistant. [sic]
to counteract suicidal effects a glass of whisky or brandy Can give artificial respiration.

1/ Phosgene 2/ chlorine & 3/ chloropicrin affect the lungs and are letheal [sic]
1/ smells of musty hay or rotting vegitation [sic]. Vomiting, coughing, spitting frothy blood stained sputum, collapse. Treat as stretcher cases.
Phosgene [inserted] feeling of [/inserted] well being for 24 hrs
Any movement will aggravate lungs. Give them hot sweet tea. no smoking or alcohol. Face purple If in heavy, concentration. Non persistant [sic].
2/ & 3/ more or less same effect.
2 smells of [deleted] chlord [/deleted] chloride of lime
3 smells of amonia [sic].
(Dry land drowning) [underlined] do not [/underlined] give artificial respiration

May not get effects of first concentration nor second, third if light, but will get full effect of all attacks when it does finally affect you.
Gas detectors turn reddish brown.
Use Anti gas ointment on hands freely to protect them when wearing gas clothing.

Mustard & Lewisite, blister gases.
[underlined] Mustard [/underlined] gas, smells of garlic, dark brown oily liquid, accumulitive [sic] effect. Under surface persistancy [sic] hydrorolosis [sic], mustard gas is broken down into its various parts when mixed with water.
Insidious, very persistant [sic].
Two way action affects lungs stomach & breathing passages & also blisters the skin.
Delayed effects.
[underlined] Lewisite. [/underlined] Smells of geraniums contains arscnic. [sic] V. Persistant affects lungs & skin. Dk brown oily liquid. Delayed effects. Mustard vapour on the body will cause redness which may turn to blister 6/12 hrs. Use Anti Gas oniment [sic] & scrub part

affected. In the eyes, tears smarting, great pain, and cannot look at the light:-
Photophobia. Swollen lids & puss comes from between eyelids if in bad concentration.
If in light con. wash eyes out with 1 level teaspoonful salt in 1 pt of water. Wash eyes out often.
On the skin in liquid form, [inserted] in liquid concent. [/inserted] Mop up liquid, burn rag, apply Anti gas ornment [sic], scrub affected part.
In the eyes use same treatment as for vapour.
[underlined] Lewisite [/underlined] vapour will cause redness which may turn to blister. Looks like a weal.

Lewisite Liquid same as Mustard. except that M. blisters are round & flat & L are up, down, up [diagram]
Iodine can be applied after having scrubbed affected part or peroxide.
If clothes are splashed take them off.
Lewisite in the eyes same as mustard, will cause blindness (no hope for eyes).
Mustard can be mixed with B.B.C. and you will only smell B.B.C. Take same precautions

as you would for Mustard in case it has been mixed with BBC.

Linseed oil covering cape.
Gas mask [inserted] slung [/inserted] eyeshields, cap cover with cap back to front, cape on back with string over shoulder.
When warning goes turn back to wind pull string and pull [deleted] cover [/deleted] round.
Apply anti gas oniment [sic] to exposed parts of body. Take out respirator, harness down take off cap & cover and eyeshields put on respirator. replace cap & cover. Fasten haversack, push h.s. to back, put arms through sleeves of cape, fasten cape from bottom up and fasten collar under resp. tube. Put tin of AG oniment [sic] in pocket, rub over with hands first to remove contamination
