Dear Marie,

You might possibly have received a cable & maybe a couple of letters before this reaches you. In any case here's wishing both yourself and Eileen the very best for your respective birthdays. There is tons of stuff here which would make really good presents However money has been ebbing away like water and all I could manage was a pair of stockings each. I sent them to you. Believe me, now that the people are not so scared of the Aussies & what we might do, we are having a pretty good time. The dance music is awful and they have no "old time". The pictures are wholly & solely [indecipherable] to us the [indecipherable] & you may take a table where you can be served with drinks [indecipherable] etc during the show. The speech of the locals is very clipped and they have many different pronunciations and different meanings to various of our phrases. We are supposed to speak like the yanks. Businesses close everywhere at 4.30 but the pubs are open till 8 at night. How does [indecipherable name] like his new district? I'm eagerly awaiting some news from home.

Love to Dad and the family
