Description

Talnudge 'Red' Simpson, a corporal serving 416th Fighter Squadron, trained in Madison, Wisconsin as a radio operator. After attending radar school, he trained on the Anson in Algeria and later performed patrol operations in Grottaglie, Italy. He recalls distinctive engine sounds and experiences flying Beaufighters and Mosquitos. Talnudge performed intruder operations and ground target operations from Naples. He recalls being hit and shot down in San Benedetto, 22 April 1945, being captured and held prisoner until the end of war. Talnudge returned home to Louisiana, travelling via Fort Hamilton, New York, but served in Miami until 1946. Later, he joined the automobile parts and equipment business and was involved in the night fighter veteran association in 1976.
