FLT. SERGT. GORDON PRESCOTT, SPALDING
FAILED TO RETURN FROM RAID
It is with a sense of personal loss that we record the presumed death in action on January 8th of Flt. Sgt. Gordon Prescott (22), R.A.F., younger son of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Prescott, Sheep Market, Spalding. Since that date, when he failed to return from an operational raid over Germany, Flt. Sgt. Prescott had been posted missing, and the further news was received by his parents on Wednesday as follows:
“I am directed to inform you, with deep regret, that notwithstanding the repatriation of personnel and the greater facilities for search which exist following the cessation of hostilities in the European theatre, no evidence of the survival of your son has been received in the department since he was reported missing. In these circumstances, and on the assumption that you have no information which would indicate that he is alive, his death has now been presumed, for official purposes, to occurred on 8th January, 1945.”
Flt. Sgt. Prescott was a linotype operator on the staff of the “Free Press” before joining the R.A.F., and enjoyed great popularity.
An old boy of Spalding Grammar School, Flt. Sgt Prescott won the School sports junior championship in 1936 and the middle school championship in 1938. He had occupied the position of assistant scout-master of the Spalding Town Troop of Scouts.
Mr. and Mrs. Prescott’s elder son, Major R. Prescott, is now back in this country from overseas. Much sympathy will be with the family in their sad loss.
