<text>529 items. Collection concerns Pilot Officer James Douglas Hudson, DFC (755052 Royal Air Force) who joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in June 1939 and trained as an observer. While on route to Malta in August 1940 his Blenheim crashed in Tunisia and he was subsequently interned for two and a half years by Vichy French in Tunisia and Algeria. After being freed he returned to Great Britain and after navigator retraining completed a tour of 30 operations on 100 Squadron. The collection contains letters to and from his parents and from French penfriends while interned in Tunisia and Algeria, newspaper cuttings of various events, logbooks and lists of operations, official documents and photographs. A further 23 items are in two sub-collections with details of navigator examinations and postcards of Laghouat Algeria.<br /><br />The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Elizabeth Smith and Yvonne Puncher and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.<br />

My Dear Mother & Dad,
Thank you for your Wednesday’s letter which arrived this afternoon. Thank you also for arranging about my watch glass. It doesn’t matter about its being unbreakable, in fact it may be advantageous, because I have broken the previous two glasses very quickly. The shoe situation isn’t serious, but it will be very useful to have the old ones repaired. I am not in a hurry for them.
My laundry came back today. The socks are like this [drawing], & they were like this [drawing] when sent. The towel looks as though a
[page break]
steam roller has been over it, & my new underpants’ elastic is torn to ribbons. Unfortunately I sent a second lot off yesterday before these were returned, but it would be wastage to continue like this.
Thank you very much for offering to send money. I can manage quite O.K. until I come home. Apparently it is quite usual for A. M. to be slow in arranging about pay.
I am continuing & finishing my letter now, ie, ab. 5.45 am. Friday. I have been on duty & I want to post this before I go to bed so you will get it on Saturday. Will you please ‘phone Alice? All the boys are well & [underlined] I [/underlined] send all my love & best wishes.
Douglas.
