Sylvia worked in a drapers, then a hosiery and lingerie shop in Grantham where airmen and WAAFs would spend their clothing coupons on rayon stockings. The coupons would be taken to the bank. She recalls being quizzed at lunch by a spy about airfields. He was later arrested and bit on a lethal pill after his arrest. Sylvia subsequently worked in Stamford, staying there during the week. She explains about food rationing; how her family would get more butter and cheese and share pigs and rabbits.

Donald went to Buckingham Palace on VE Day to collect his Distinguished Flying Medal, walking seven miles from the station to see Sylvia.
